Chapter 9 - Cora Hayes

The bank that held Cora Hayes’s box occupied a marble building downtown. Emily went with Maya and an attorney. Chloe stayed with Leo, furious at being excluded but unable to deny the warning named her.
The brass key from the wall case opened box 112. Inside were twelve sealed envelopes, a ledger, and a small video camera. The envelopes bore the names from the microfilm. Leo’s envelope was empty.
The camera held one recording. Caroline appeared older and thinner than Emily remembered, seated against a blank wall.
“Emily, I have lied because truth without safety is another weapon. Chloe is your sister in every way that matters, but I did not give birth to her. I rescued her from Northlight after her mother died. Martin took her back before I could complete the guardianship.”
Emily paused the video. The expected sisterhood did not disappear; it changed shape.
Caroline continued. “Richard believes blood grants ownership. He will use tests, money, and fear to turn family into a chain. The ledger proves his crimes, but one page is missing. I gave it to the only person he would never suspect.”
The recording ended before naming that person.
The ledger documented payments from judges, doctors, and wealthy families. Some entries were decades old; others were recent. One payment had been made by Julian two months before he contacted Chloe. He had not stumbled onto her identity. He had purchased it.
Emily felt something inside her settle. Until then, a small disloyal part of her had hoped Julian’s worst acts came after desperation. The ledger showed calculation came first.
Maya began arranging federal protection for the named victims. Before they left, the bank manager delivered an envelope deposited that morning. Inside was a photograph of Chloe standing beside Caroline’s grave, with crosshairs drawn over her chest.
On the back: Bring the ledger to the river warehouse.
Emily called home. No answer.
Police reached the house in six minutes. The front door was open. Leo hid beneath his bed, clutching the astronaut toy Chloe had given him. Chloe was gone.
Security footage showed she had left willingly after receiving a phone call. On the kitchen counter lay Caroline’s diary page and a note in Chloe’s handwriting.
I know who has the missing page. I can end this. Keep Leo safe.
The call log led to a prepaid number used once near the county jail.
Julian had called her.
Emily confronted him again. He denied threatening Chloe but admitted telling her the missing page belonged to Martin. “She thinks she can trade the ledger for it.”
“Why would she trust you?”
“Because I told her what Caroline never did.”
“What?”
Julian leaned close to the glass. “The name of her mother.”
He wrote it on the visitor slip and pushed it forward.
Emily read the name twice.

The woman listed as Chloe’s mother was Dr. Evelyn Hart, Richard’s wife and Julian’s supposedly dead mother.
