Chapter 10 - The Warehouse at Black River
Emily and Maya reached the river warehouse after dark. Federal agents surrounded the district, but the building’s tunnels opened onto abandoned shipping yards and water. Richard had chosen it because every wall offered an escape.
Inside, Chloe stood beneath a hanging lamp with the ledger. Martin, released from the hospital into transport, had vanished after an armed ambush. Now he waited beside Richard. A third figure remained in shadow.
“You said my mother was here,” Chloe called.
The third figure stepped into the light.
Evelyn Hart was in her sixties, elegant despite the cheap coat, her blonde hair silver at the roots. Chloe had her eyes.
Evelyn did not embrace her. “Give Richard the ledger.”
Chloe’s hope shattered visibly. “Are you my mother?”
“I gave birth to you.”
“That was not my question.”
Emily entered from the loading bay. “Chloe, put it down and come with me.”
Richard raised a gun. “Always arriving where you were not invited.”
Emily held up the sapphire. The police had replaced the stone with a tracking replica, but Richard could not know that. “Ledger for the necklace.”
He wanted both. Emily expected greed; Maya’s team expected movement. When Richard approached, Chloe threw the ledger into a puddle of oil. Martin lunged to save it. Emily tossed the false sapphire in the opposite direction. For one second, the men chose evidence over people.
Agents breached the doors.
Gunfire struck metal beams, deafening but brief. Martin surrendered. Richard escaped onto the river catwalk with Evelyn. Chloe followed before Emily could stop her.
On the catwalk, Evelyn turned and aimed Richard’s second gun at him.
“It ends here,” she said.
Richard laughed. “You have said that for thirty years.”
Evelyn fired into the railing beside him. Rusted metal collapsed. Richard fell, caught a lower chain, and disappeared into darkness as officers rushed below.
Evelyn placed the gun down. “I brought him here for you,” she told Chloe.
“You brought me here as bait.”
“Both can be true.”
The river search found blood, a torn sleeve, and no body.
The ledger, treated quickly, remained readable. It led to arrests in three states and the reopening of dozens of adoption cases. Martin agreed to testify in exchange for reduced charges. Evelyn claimed she had infiltrated Richard’s operation and supplied Caroline with records, but Maya arrested her for conspiracy until that claim could be tested.
Chloe refused to visit her.
Emily returned home to Leo and washed river grime from her hands. He asked whether the bad man was gone.
“He cannot hurt us tonight,” she said.
It was not the promise he wanted, but it was the first honest promise she had made in weeks.
In the pocket of Chloe’s coat, Emily found a dry fragment torn from the ledger before it fell.
It listed a payment made five years earlier.
