Chapter 3 - Room 317

The key led Emily to the Ashford Hotel, a narrow brick building near the courthouse. She waited until Julian left for work, then asked Mrs. Alvarez to take Leo to preschool. At the front desk, Emily said her husband had forgotten medication in room 317. Her navy scrubs and hospital badge did what lies alone could not; the clerk offered sympathy and sent a housekeeper upstairs.
Room 317 was not a bedroom. The hotel had converted it into a monthly storage office. Filing cabinets lined one wall. A desk held a printer, a camera, and three prepaid phones. Photographs covered a corkboard.
Most were of Emily.
Emily leaving the hospital. Emily collecting Leo. Emily unlocking her mother’s old house before its sale. Red circles marked dates on the margins. Several photographs showed Chloe entering the Hart home. In some, Julian followed her. In others, an older man in a gray cap watched from a parked car.
The center of the board held a copy of Caroline’s death certificate and a handwritten family tree. Caroline’s name branched toward Emily. Another branch had been erased so hard the paper had torn.
Emily opened the nearest cabinet. Inside were bank statements for the college fund she and Julian had built for Leo. Withdrawals totaling eighty-four thousand dollars went to Northlight Heritage LLC. The registered address was room 317.
The second drawer contained letters from Chloe to Julian.
You promised I could meet her when the test was complete.
I am not asking for her money.
If Caroline lied to both of us, Emily deserves the truth.
The last letter was different.
You took the original report. Give it back or I will go to Emily myself.
A floorboard creaked in the corridor.
Emily photographed everything. The knob turned. She slipped behind the door as a man entered. Gray cap. Heavy coat. The same watcher from the photographs.
He crossed to the desk, opened a hidden compartment, and removed a blue folder. Emily saw a medical laboratory logo before he tucked it beneath his coat.
Her phone buzzed.
Julian: Thought you were working today.
The man looked toward the sound.
Emily shoved the door into him and ran. He caught her sleeve, tearing the fabric, but she struck his wrist with the edge of her phone and escaped into the stairwell. He did not follow beyond the lobby.
Outside, Chloe waited beside Emily’s car.
“If you go home,” Chloe said, “Julian will know you found this place.”
Emily unlocked the car but did not enter. “Are you sleeping with my husband?”
Chloe flinched. “No.”
“You enter my bedroom and close the door.”
“Because the vent is there.”
“What vent?”
“The one behind your wardrobe. Julian said Caroline hid records inside the wall.” Chloe’s eyes filled. “He told me you were unstable. Then he told me you were dead. Every time I caught one lie, he replaced it with a better one.”
Emily held up the photograph of Caroline and the blonde child. “Who are you?”
Chloe stared at it. “My name is Chloe Vale. The child is me.”
“Why was my mother with you?”
“Because she came to the foster home every month until I was six.”
The hotel door opened behind them. The man in the gray cap stepped outside.
Chloe grabbed Emily’s arm. “That is Martin Vale, my adoptive father.”
Martin lifted his phone and aimed it at them.

“And if he sees us together,” Chloe said, “Leo becomes leverage.”
