Chapter 4 - The Space Behind the Wall

Emily drove straight to Leo’s preschool. He was safe, finger-painting a purple dog. She signed him out, ignored three calls from Julian, and took him to Mrs. Alvarez. Chloe sat in the passenger seat with both hands visible, as though trying to prove she carried no weapon.
“Start at the beginning,” Emily said.
Chloe had grown up believing her birth mother died during delivery. At sixteen she found Caroline’s letters hidden in Martin’s safe. They contained no confession, only apologies and references to the Winter Star. After Caroline died, the letters stopped. Years later Julian contacted Chloe, claiming he had found her name while settling family documents. He offered to help establish the connection in exchange for secrecy.
“He said you had inherited everything and would destroy any claim I made,” Chloe said. “I never wanted a claim.”
“Yet you wore my necklace.”
Shame reddened Chloe’s face. “Julian gave it to me. He said Caroline intended it for her lost daughter. I believed him for one day. Then Leo saw me. I should have returned it.”
At the house, Emily moved the wardrobe. Behind it was an ordinary heating vent secured by new screws. Julian’s toolbox was missing one screwdriver. Chloe produced a coin and worked the screws loose.
The duct contained a narrow metal case wrapped in waxed cloth. Inside were microcassettes, a brass key, and a page from Caroline’s diary.
If either girl finds this, Martin has failed to bury the truth. Trust the recording dated October 14. Trust no blood test arranged by a Hart.
Emily read the sentence twice. “A Hart. Julian is a Hart.”
“So was his father,” Chloe said.
They found the dated cassette and an old recorder in the attic. Caroline’s voice emerged through static.
“My daughters, if you are hearing this, I have run out of time. Emily knows me as her mother. Chloe may know me as a stranger. I allowed that cruelty because Martin threatened to take both of you. But blood is the smallest part of what connects you. The sapphire contains the account number and the name of the witness. Do not let Richard Hart see it.”
The tape clicked off.
Richard Hart was Julian’s father, dead for twelve years.
Or so Emily had been told.
A car door slammed outside. Julian’s sedan blocked the driveway.
Chloe backed away from the window. “He tracked one of the prepaid phones. I took it from the hotel.”
Julian entered without calling. His gaze moved from Emily to Chloe, then to the open vent.
“You should not have brought her here,” he said.
Emily placed herself between him and the metal case. “You stole from Leo.”
“I borrowed money to solve a problem your mother created.”
“You told Chloe I was dead.”
“Because she would have arrived at our door demanding half your life.”
“I never asked for anything,” Chloe said.
Julian ignored her. “Emily, give me the case. We can still protect Leo.”
“From whom?”
Julian looked toward the street.
Across from the house, a man in a gray cap sat behind the wheel of a black sedan.
