Chapter 11 - The Receipt With Her Name
Emily had never paid Northlight. Her bank histories proved it. Yet the receipt contained her former address, her Social Security digits, and a signature close enough to survive casual inspection.
The date was two weeks before Leo’s birth.
Maya traced the payment to a cashier’s check purchased by Julian. When confronted, he claimed Caroline had instructed him years earlier to use Emily’s identity if a medical emergency arose. It was a weak lie, and this time prosecutors charged him with identity theft as well as financial crimes.
Emily hired a forensic geneticist independent of the hospital and the police. Samples were collected under observation from Emily, Leo, Chloe, Julian, and eventually Evelyn. Results returned after ten agonizing days.
Emily was Leo’s biological mother. Julian was his biological father. Chloe was not Emily’s biological sister. Evelyn was Chloe’s biological mother. Richard was Julian’s biological father but not Chloe’s.
The family tree finally rejected Richard’s invented ownership.
The result brought relief, then a new question. Why place Leo on the list? Why forge a receipt suggesting he had been purchased?
Caroline’s remaining envelopes answered part of it. Northlight labeled rescued or threatened children with tree names. Linden did not refer only to Leo. It was an operation created by Caroline to move evidence and witnesses beyond Richard’s reach. Leo’s envelope was empty because it had never been meant for him. Someone had reused the code to frighten Emily.
Evelyn requested a meeting. In the detention center she admitted forging the receipt and manipulating the samples Richard obtained. “I needed him focused on your family while I found the ledger.”
Emily stared at her. “You endangered my child as a distraction.”
“I believed Julian would protect him.”
“Then you believed the wrong man.”
Evelyn’s composure cracked. She said she had surrendered Chloe to keep Richard from learning the infant was not his. Martin promised a safe adoption, then used the child to control Evelyn for years. Caroline tried to rescue Chloe and failed.
“Where is the missing ledger page?” Emily asked.
“Caroline gave it to Julian on your wedding day.”
The answer explained the way Julian had always guarded the wedding album, carrying it himself during every move.
At home, Emily removed the album’s leather backing. A folded page lay beneath the cardboard. It listed the officials who protected Richard, including the judge assigned to Julian’s preliminary hearing.
Maya moved quickly. The judge was arrested before dawn, and Julian’s case transferred. The page also contained a handwritten note from Caroline.
If Julian gives this to you willingly, trust him. If you must find it, he has already chosen Richard.
Emily sat on the floor with the album in her lap and mourned not the marriage she had lost, but the marriage she had imagined.
Then she noticed one wedding photograph had been cut from its sleeve.
