Chapter 8 - The House of Wren)

Rain covered Reyes as he crossed the lawn behind Senator Wren’s estate. Nadia waited in the church van two streets away with Pierce’s family and a federal marshal who had begun to understand that the crisis was larger than one threatened doctor.
Claire’s house was guarded by four men. Reyes identified overlapping patrols, cameras, and an alarm linked not to police headquarters but to Northstar’s private server.
He could have entered violently. Eleven years earlier, violence would have been his first answer. Daniel’s last instruction stopped him.
Bring them out. Leave the truth standing.
Mara looped the cameras for ninety seconds. Reyes climbed to the second floor using an ivy trellis and entered through the room of Claire’s fourteen-year-old son, Ethan. The boy stood behind the door gripping a baseball bat.
“Your mother sent me,” Reyes whispered.
“Prove it.”
Reyes showed the black coin. Ethan lowered the bat.
Claire was locked in Malcolm’s study downstairs. She had spent the last hour searching her husband’s safe and found a second phone containing messages from Hale and Rusk. One thread discussed Lily’s interrogation.
She sent the messages to Mara before leaving the room.
A guard discovered the broken lock.
Reyes triggered the house fire alarm. Sprinklers erupted, lights strobed, and a prerecorded voice ordered evacuation. He guided Claire and Ethan into a hidden dumbwaiter while the guards searched the halls. The shaft led to the wine cellar, where a coal chute opened beyond the security fence.
They were ten feet from the trees when Malcolm’s chief guard saw them.
Reyes turned and placed himself between the gunman and the family.
The guard fired.
The bullet struck Reyes high in the shoulder and spun him into the mud. Claire grabbed the dropped baseball bat and hit the gunman’s wrist before he could fire again. Ethan kicked the weapon into a drain.
Reyes rose, disabled the guard with one arm, and kept moving.
In the van, Claire pressed a towel against his wound. “You need a hospital.”
“Conveniently, we are going to one.”
At Saint Catherine, Daniel walked through the police command post wearing Nolan’s raincoat and a patrol cap low over his face. Officers rushed between entrances chasing false sightings Mara injected into dispatch. Rusk had concentrated loyal men near the emergency department and sent honest officers to search distant buildings.
Daniel entered a supply lift beside Hale’s ambulance just before midnight. Through the gap, he saw a steel archive case disguised beneath medical blankets. Hale stood beside it with Senator Wren.
“Rusk has lost control,” Hale whispered.
Wren replied, “Shepherd expected Daniel to react.”
“Shepherd did not expect the girl to copy the ledger.”
“The girl is the objective now. The records are expendable.”
The lift descended below the marked basement. Daniel followed through a service passage and transmitted their conversation to Mara.
Inside the civil-defense level, Jonah waited near the archive vault. His hand rested near his weapon.
Hale and Wren entered. Rusk arrived from another corridor with six officers, including Nolan, whose bruised throat made every breath angry.
“Where is Vale?” Hale demanded.
“Still inside the hospital,” Rusk said. “We have contained him.”
Jonah looked toward the ventilation shadow where Daniel hid. “No, you haven’t.”
Alarms sounded upstairs. Eli had begun the breach.
Rusk ordered officers toward the stairwell. Daniel dropped behind the steel case as the passage cleared. He could reach Hale now. One movement, one choke hold, one stolen gun.
Then Mara spoke in his earpiece. “Claire sent proof. We have Malcolm ordering Rusk to kill Lily. We still need Hale tied to Sarah and Glass Harbor.”
Daniel waited.
Hale unlocked the archive. Inside were paper ledgers, classified drives, photographs, and a row of black coins identical to Daniel’s.
Wren picked one up. “Sentimental nonsense.”
“Useful nonsense,” Hale answered. “The colonel kept his coin for twenty years. We knew exactly how to wake him.”
Daniel’s fingers tightened.
Hale removed a file labeled SARAH VALE.
“The wife almost destroyed everything,” he said. “Rusk should have killed her sooner.”

Daniel stepped from the shadows.
“Say that again.”
