Chapter 10 - The Three Names)
The masked woman called herself Vesper.
She wore black medical clothing beneath a raincoat and moved with the balance of a trained operator. Two others held Doctor Pierce and Eli at gunpoint in the corridor. Reyes was still minutes away. Mara could see them through cameras but had no way to intervene.
“Give me Sarah’s drive,” Vesper said.
“Release Lily.”
“The drive first.”
Hale moved toward her. “Shepherd promised extraction.”
Vesper shot him in the leg without looking.
Hale collapsed, screaming.
“Shepherd promised nothing to you,” she said.
Daniel understood the hierarchy at last. Hale, Rusk, and Wren had believed themselves powerful. To Northstar they were disposable clerks.
Vesper ordered Daniel back into the hospital. Her people gathered Rusk and Wren from the archive level and forced everyone into the clinic ward. Jonah came with them, hands raised, his shirt dark with blood. Nolan and the restrained officers were left below for police to find.
The storm intensified. Sirens surrounded the property. Mara anonymously sent part of the archive to the state attorney general, but Northstar blocked external networks before the transfer completed. The only intact evidence stream was on the phone in Daniel’s jacket.
Vesper tied Hale, Rusk, and Wren to chairs. “Confess to the Bellweather operation.”
Wren stared at her. “Why?”
“Because Daniel needs to believe he won.”
Rusk began to understand. “You are going to kill us and blame him.”
“Correct.”
Vesper placed Daniel’s recovered pistol on a tray. Ballistics would connect it to the scene. She instructed Mara, listening helplessly, to activate a live stream or Lily would die.
Daniel looked at the three men. “Tell the truth.”
Hale cursed him.
Daniel opened Sarah’s file and read payment dates, operation codes, and the names of victims. He described Lily’s attack. He described the order to alter her medication. He described the truck selected to kill Sarah.
One by one, the men began correcting him.
Vanity did what fear could not. Hale insisted that Wren had authorized Sarah’s death. Wren blamed Rusk for using excessive force. Rusk revealed Hale ordered Lily taken to the rail station. Each tried to reduce his guilt by enlarging the guilt of the others.
Their confessions went live.
Outside, reporters received alerts. Officers heard their captain admit to murder and evidence tampering. The attorney general’s office recorded every word.
Vesper let them speak because she planned to erase the stream and everyone inside the room.
Daniel counted positions, ammunition, doors, and seconds. Eli’s fingers moved subtly behind his back, tapping a pattern against a pipe.
Fire system ready.
Reyes appeared behind a glass door at the far corridor, wounded but armed. No clean shot.
Vesper pulled Lily from the wheelchair and locked an arm across her bandaged face.
“Drop the phone,” she ordered.
Daniel kept the stream alive for three more seconds. Enough for Wren to name the Northstar emergency site. Enough for Rusk to admit Sarah’s crash was arranged. Enough for Hale to say that Lily had been beaten because she would not reveal where she sent the ledger.
Then Daniel dropped the phone.
Vesper smiled.
He pressed Hale’s remote, which Eli had told him controlled not oxygen but the clinic’s ancient fire doors.
Steel barriers slammed from the ceiling.
One separated Vesper from her two gunmen. Another trapped Hale, Rusk, and Wren away from Daniel’s pistol. Sprinklers exploded overhead, filling the ward with freezing water and turning the floor lights into blurred stars.
Lily drove her heel down on Vesper’s foot and threw her weight sideways. The movement tore at her ribs, but it lowered her head beneath the pistol.
Daniel crossed the distance.
Vesper fired. The bullet grazed his temple. He caught her arm, forced the weapon upward, and shielded Lily with his body. They struck a bed frame. Vesper fought with techniques Daniel knew because they came from the same classified school.
She whispered, “Shepherd said you had become soft.”
Daniel trapped her wrist. “Shepherd confused mercy with weakness.”
He disarmed her.
Across the barrier, Reyes and Jonah attacked the second team from opposite sides. Eli released Pierce, who rolled Lily’s wheelchair behind cover. Mara restored the stream using the clinic’s fire-alarm line.
Vesper drew a blade. Daniel stepped away instead of engaging.
Police breached the exterior doors at that moment. Honest officers saw her armed above an injured girl. She dropped the blade and raised her hands.
Hale, Rusk, and Wren remained alive, recorded, and surrounded by witnesses. Their confessions could no longer be dismissed as Daniel’s claim.
As federal agents entered, Lily reached for her father.
Daniel knelt beside her. She touched the blood at his temple, then typed on her tablet with trembling fingers.
IS IT OVER?
He wanted to say yes.
Instead he looked toward Vesper.

And Jonah was holding the black coin with the broken crown.
