THE NIGHT SPECTER RETURNED / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - The Man Who Refused)

Jonah Cross had been Daniel’s closest friend before Glass Harbor and the only operator who openly blamed him afterward.

On the mountain, Jonah had carried two wounded men to the extraction ridge. The helicopter bearing the broken crown had hovered overhead, then turned away. Jonah’s younger brother died in his arms while Daniel radioed for an extraction that never came.

In the years after, Jonah built a private-security company and became wealthy protecting people he once would have despised. Daniel invited him to Lily’s high-school graduation. Jonah never answered.

Now he stood beneath Saint Catherine with Northstar’s symbol in his hand.

“Can he hear us?” Daniel asked.

Mara activated an old maintenance speaker. “Jonah, step away from the archive.”

He looked up. “Hello, Mara.”

“Are you Shepherd?” Reyes demanded.

“No.”

“Do you work for Shepherd?”

Jonah gave a tired smile. “Everyone works for Shepherd eventually. Some of us just know it.”

Daniel took the microphone. “Why did you refuse the call?”

“Because I knew it was bait. Your activation signal woke every Northstar cell in the country.”

“Then why come?”

Jonah lifted the message card. “To keep them from taking Lily.”

“They already tried.”

“That was Rusk. Rusk is a dog guarding a door he has never entered. Shepherd wants Lily alive because she has something Sarah hid.”

Daniel looked at his daughter. Lily shook her head, confused.

“What?”

“A memory key,” Jonah said. “Sarah developed a way to divide an encryption code across human-readable objects. A song, a childhood story, a sequence of photographs. She gave Lily the key without telling her what it was.”

Mara swore softly. With such a key, the flash drive might open every Northstar record, not merely the Bellweather branch.

“Who is Shepherd?” Daniel asked.

“I have never seen a face.”

“But you obey orders.”

“I have spent eleven years getting close enough to find the truth.” Jonah’s calm broke. “You disappeared into fatherhood. Reyes drank. Mara hid behind computers. I stayed inside the machine that killed my brother.”

“You could have told us.”

“Northstar watched all of you. Trusting you would have killed you.”

Daniel heard sincerity, but sincerity did not prove innocence.

“The archive arrives at midnight,” Jonah continued. “Hale, Rusk, and Wren will supervise the purge. Shepherd ordered them to capture Lily and blame her death on you. If you attack, they will destroy everything.”

“What do you propose?”

“Give me Sarah’s drive and the journal. I take them to Shepherd. In exchange, Lily lives.”

Reyes laughed without humor. “That is not a plan. That is surrender.”

“It buys time.”

“For whom?”

Jonah looked into the lens. “For Daniel to choose whether he wants revenge or truth.”

The underground camera died.

Eli finished bypassing the pressure grid, but the internal door had been sealed. Jonah had locked himself in the archive level.

Back on seven, Lily motioned for the tablet. She typed slowly.

MOM’S BEDTIME STORY.

Daniel remembered Sarah telling Lily the same strange story when she was young, about a girl who crossed a forest by following thirteen stars. The route changed each night. Lily would correct Sarah whenever she skipped a star.

Mara asked Lily to reconstruct it. Lily wrote fragments: blue river, silver fox, three doors, sleeping king, broken crown. They were not random images. Each could map to categories in Sarah’s journal.

“The key is real,” Mara said. “But I need the complete sequence.”

Lily closed her eye, fighting medication and pain. She remembered twelve stars.

The thirteenth would not come.

Daniel told her to stop. “You don’t have to solve this tonight.”

She gripped his sleeve and typed.

THEY KILLED MOM.

“And I will make them answer.”

NO. WE WILL.

At 11:32, Claire Wren sent a hidden message. Her husband had left home for the hospital. Hale’s archive was moving. But before she could take her son, Malcolm’s guards locked them both inside the house.

Daniel now faced two battles. The evidence would arrive in twenty-eight minutes. Claire and her child might not survive that long.

He divided his small force. Reyes would go to Claire. Eli would prepare the archive breach. Mara would control communications. Pierce would remain with Lily.

“And you?” Reyes asked.

Daniel looked at the police uniform Eli had stolen from a locker.

“I’m going to meet the three names.”
