THE NIGHT SPECTER RETURNED / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - The Silent Ward)

Daniel switched off the bedside lamp before Nolan entered. Darkness erased the room except for the blue glow of rain beyond the windows.

“Equipment failure,” Nolan said. “Doctor sent me.”

He closed the door behind him.

Daniel stood beside the curtain, hidden from the hallway. “Doctors usually wear white coats.”

Nolan spun, reaching for his pistol.

Daniel caught his wrist, drove it into the wall, and covered the man’s mouth before he could shout. The syringe fell. Nolan was younger and heavier, but he fought like a man accustomed to frightening civilians. Daniel fought like someone trained to end a struggle before the enemy understood it had begun.

Three seconds later, Nolan was facedown with his arm locked behind him.

Daniel picked up the syringe using a towel.

“What is in this?”

Nolan gasped. “Sedative.”

Daniel pressed the needle against the man’s neck without breaking skin. “Then you won’t mind.”

“Wait.”

“Who ordered Lily killed?”

“I don’t know.”

The needle touched him.

“Rusk,” Nolan whispered. “Rusk said she couldn’t wake up. He said the girl opened a door that was supposed to stay closed.”

“What door?”

“Northstar.”

“What is Northstar?”

Nolan laughed once, breathless and afraid. “You really don’t know? It’s you, Colonel. It was built for people like you.”

Footsteps approached outside.

Daniel used a pressure point to render Nolan unconscious, then rolled him beneath the bed. Doctor Pierce entered through the adjoining treatment room pushing a laundry cart. Reyes followed in hospital scrubs.

“Power will return in ninety seconds,” Pierce said.

They transferred Lily into the cart beneath clean blankets. Daniel whispered the plan to her. She gripped his fingers once, trusting him.

Reyes wheeled her through the treatment room while Pierce stayed to restore the monitors with a training simulator. From the hallway, Lily would appear asleep behind closed blinds.

They reached service elevator C just as emergency power returned.

On the seventh floor, dust covered murals of smiling animals. Empty rooms stretched into darkness. Eli had converted an old nurses’ station into a command post. Monitors displayed police radios, traffic cameras, and the storage facility.

Mara appeared on a secure video screen, silver hair cropped short, glasses reflecting lines of code.

“Hello, Lily,” she said gently. “Last time I saw you, you threw mashed potatoes at a colonel.”

Lily’s eye widened.

Daniel almost smiled. She had been three.

Pierce connected portable monitors. “She is stable, but moving her again could be dangerous.”

“Then we finish without moving her,” Daniel said.

Eli placed the red key from Sarah’s recipe box on the desk. Reyes had retrieved it from Daniel’s house. “Union Station locker 214 is leased under Sarah’s maiden name. Train terminal opens at four.”

“Too obvious,” Reyes said. “Rusk will be watching.”

“He expects a grieving father,” Daniel replied. “That is what he will see.”

At 4:10, Daniel entered Union Station alone. Cameras tracked him from the doors. He bought coffee, sat beneath the departure board, and called the hospital loudly enough for anyone nearby to hear. He asked about Lily’s condition. He sounded tired and lost.

Meanwhile, Eli crawled through a maintenance tunnel beneath the lockers. He removed the back panel of 214 and found a red leather journal, a flash drive, and an envelope addressed to Daniel in Sarah’s handwriting.

He photographed everything before extracting it.

Two plainclothes officers watched Daniel leave empty-handed.

Back in the abandoned ward, Daniel opened Sarah’s letter.

My love,

If you are reading this, then I failed to keep Lily away from the truth. I am sorry. Northstar is not a company. It is a selection program. Glass Harbor was not designed to stop weapons. It was designed to erase the soldiers who refused to obey illegal orders and identify the ones who could be controlled.

Daniel stopped.

His wife had known.

The letter continued.

Victor Hale handles the money. Rusk handles enforcement. Wren gives it legitimacy. But none of them created it. The person who did knows you survived.

A symbol had been drawn beneath the final line: a white crown with one broken point.

Reyes stared at it. “I saw that mark at Glass Harbor.”

“Where?”

“On the helicopter that abandoned us.”

Mara inserted the flash drive into an isolated computer. It contained hundreds of encrypted files and one unprotected video.

Sarah appeared on-screen, sitting in the same kitchen where Daniel had eaten breakfast with her for fourteen years.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel, if Lily has been hurt, do not trust the hospital.”

Behind them, the elevator bell rang.

The seventh-floor indicator lit for the first time in three years.
