THE NIGHT EVERY EXIT LOCKED / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - The Files Open

At the hospital, police separated Ethan from the medical team.

He demanded his attorney.

He demanded access to Claire.

He demanded the lockdown be lifted.

Nobody obeyed him.

Liam remained beside Claire while nurses completed her examination. When they were alone, she began to cry.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Liam shook his head.

“You have nothing to apologize for.”

“I stopped calling. I believed him when he said you hated me.”

“I never hated you.”

“I left you outside the gate.”

“You gave me the signal.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“I didn’t know whether you remembered.”

“I remembered everything.”

Mara entered carrying the sealed folder. She placed it on the counter and explained that the board had voted unanimously to suspend Ethan, freeze his executive authority, and appoint an interim leadership committee.

“The upload included the full audit,” she said. “It also included your recordings, medical documents, and copies of Ethan’s incapacity petition.”

Claire looked toward Liam.

“Can he still use those reports against me?”

“No,” Liam said. “Not after what happened tonight. And several physicians documented concerns about his interference.”

Mara opened the folder.

Inside were bank transfers, shell company registrations, messages between Ethan and senior executives, and a draft plan titled Continuity Initiative.

The plan described how Ethan would persuade the board that Claire’s mental health made her unfit to control the voting trust. It included instructions to pressure doctors, influence household staff, and isolate her from Liam.

One line made Claire’s hands shake.

Upon approval, EC assumes permanent executive authority.

EC meant Ethan Charles Hale.

He had prepared the plan before their wedding.

Their marriage had never been a partnership.

It had been an acquisition.

Police investigators entered the room and asked Claire whether she wished to make a statement.

She looked at Liam.

He gave her no instructions. He simply remained beside her.

Claire took a slow breath.

“Yes.”

Across the corridor, Ethan heard her answer.

He began shouting that she was confused and manipulated. He accused Liam of fabricating evidence. He claimed Mara had stolen privileged company documents.

Then an officer read him his rights.

Ethan’s voice disappeared.

As he was escorted through the corridor, he looked toward Claire’s room.

For years, a single glance from him had been enough to silence her.

This time, Claire met his stare.

She did not look away.
