Chapter 6 - The Audit Trap

Project Lantern reached its final stage on a Monday morning.
Mara’s investigators had collected enough evidence to call an emergency board meeting, freeze suspicious accounts, and refer the case to federal authorities.
They still needed Claire’s authorization.
Ethan had restricted her access to the company’s digital systems, but he could not legally prevent the controlling trustee from issuing a signed directive.
Mara prepared the documents.
Claire planned to sign them during a charity gala at a downtown hotel. Hundreds of guests would be present, giving her a safe opportunity to leave Ethan and meet investigators in a private conference room.
The plan failed before dinner began.
Ethan entered Claire’s dressing room holding a printed email.
It contained details of the gala meeting.
“Who is Mara bringing?” he asked.
Claire looked at the page.
Only four people knew the location.
Someone on the investigation team had betrayed them.
“I don’t know what that is.”
“Do not insult me.”
Ethan locked the bedroom door.
For nearly an hour, he demanded passwords, names, and access codes. Claire refused.
Finally, he changed tactics.
He sat beside her and spoke gently.
“You are frightened because people are using you.”
“No one is using me.”
“Mara wants control of your trust. Liam wants revenge against me. The board wants your shares. I am the only person protecting you.”
“You stole from the company.”
His expression changed.
“So you have seen the audit.”
Claire said nothing.
Ethan stood and paced toward the window.
“Do you understand what happens if those accusations become public? Thousands of employees lose confidence. Investors panic. Hospitals lose funding. Your mother’s legacy collapses.”
“You caused this.”
“I saved the company.”
“You turned it into your private account.”
Ethan faced her.
“I built the empire everyone respects.”
“My mother built it.”
The truth struck harder than an insult.
Ethan’s calm disappeared.
The confrontation that followed was brief, frightening, and hidden from the security cameras he controlled. Claire protected her head, reached for the emergency button on her phone, and triggered the encrypted upload Mara had installed.
Ethan noticed too late.
He seized the phone, but the files were already leaving the device.
When Claire became too weak to stand, panic replaced his anger.
He needed her alive.
Without Claire, the trust’s succession rules would transfer temporary control to an independent foundation, not to him. His plan required her to remain living but legally powerless.
He called an ambulance.
Then he arranged the room to support his story.
A wet towel near the bathroom.
A glass on the floor.
Water across the tile.
When paramedics arrived, Ethan looked shaken and devoted.
“She slipped in the shower,” he said.

Claire opened her eyes.
She heard every word.
