Chapter 5 - The Brother Who Kept Watching

Liam Carter never believed Claire was clumsy.
He had treated accident victims for fifteen years. He knew people sometimes fell, collided with furniture, or injured themselves during ordinary life.
He also knew when explanations repeated too neatly.
Claire had canceled family dinners, missed holidays, and stopped visiting their mother’s grave. Ethan always provided a reason.
She was tired.
She had a headache.
She was traveling.
She needed privacy.
Liam began documenting every unusual interaction.
He saved Claire’s unfinished voicemail messages. He wrote down the dates she called and remained silent. He contacted the clinics listed on insurance statements, but confidentiality laws prevented them from sharing details.
Then he received a strange package.
Inside was a copy of one medical report describing Claire as disoriented and emotionally unstable after a supposed fall.
Someone had circled a sentence written by the attending physician.
Patient’s husband answered most questions and resisted private examination.
There was no return address.
Liam suspected Claire had sent it, though he could not prove it.
He drove to the mansion the next morning.
Ethan met him outside the gate.
“Claire doesn’t want visitors.”
“I’ll hear that from her.”
“She is resting.”
“I’m a doctor. I can determine whether she needs rest.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“You are not her doctor.”
“I’m her brother.”
“You stopped behaving like one years ago.”
Liam saw movement behind an upstairs window. A curtain shifted, then closed.
“Tell Claire I came.”
Ethan smiled.
“I’ll consider it.”
Liam left, but he did not stop.
He hired no investigator and broke no law. Instead, he watched public records, company announcements, and charity appearances. He spoke with trusted colleagues at clinics Claire had visited. He asked them only to follow proper procedures if she returned.
Most importantly, he arranged an emergency protocol.
If Claire ever entered his hospital, staff were to separate her from accompanying family members and notify him immediately.
Months passed.
Then, one rainy night, Liam received a call from an unknown number.
Claire whispered four words.
“He knows about Lantern.”
The line went dead.
Liam called back, but the number was disconnected.
He contacted police and requested a welfare check. Officers visited the mansion. Ethan showed them security footage of Claire calmly walking through the library earlier that evening.
Claire told the officers she was fine.
Her face revealed nothing.
Before they left, she pressed one hand against the front window.
Her fingers formed the childhood signal she and Liam used when they needed help without speaking.
Three taps.
A pause.
Two taps.
Liam had not seen it in twenty years.
He understood immediately.

Claire was asking him not to abandon her.
He never did.
