THE NIGHT EVERY EXIT LOCKED / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Perfect Lie

The hospital gurney tore through the crowded emergency corridor just after midnight.

Nurses shouted instructions over the alarms, hurried footsteps, and ringing telephones. Beneath the cold fluorescent lights, Claire Hale lay conscious but weak under a white blanket. An oxygen tube rested beneath her nose. Faint bruises marked her face and wrists, but the terror in her eyes revealed more than any injury could.

Her husband walked beside the medical team.

Ethan Hale wore an expensive charcoal suit, polished shoes, and the expression of a devoted man facing an unexpected tragedy. One hand remained pressed dramatically against his chest.

“She slipped in the shower,” he told the nearest nurse. “She has always been clumsy.”

Claire turned her eyes toward him.

She tried to speak, but only a strained breath escaped.

Ethan leaned closer, pretending to comfort her.

“Don’t force yourself, sweetheart. I’ll explain everything.”

The trauma-room doors swung open.

Dr. Liam Carter, Chief of Emergency Medicine, entered in navy scrubs. He had been reviewing another patient’s scans when a nurse urgently summoned him. He took two steps toward the gurney, then froze.

For several seconds, he appeared unable to breathe.

“Claire?”

Ethan’s confident expression flickered.

“You know my wife?”

Liam moved directly to the bedside. He looked at Claire’s frightened face, then gently took her hand.

“She’s my younger sister.”

The color drained from Ethan’s face.

Claire’s fingers tightened weakly around Liam’s.

Ethan quickly recovered. “Then you understand how stubborn she can be. She refused to let me call an ambulance at first.”

Liam did not answer.

His eyes moved carefully across the visible signs of injury. His expression changed from shock to controlled fury.

“She didn’t fall.”

Ethan stepped back.

“She’s confused. She hit her head. Ask her yourself.”

Claire slowly lifted one trembling hand.

She pointed directly at Ethan.

The room became silent.

Two nurses immediately positioned themselves between Ethan and the bed. Another nurse moved toward the door.

Ethan laughed nervously. “This is ridiculous.”

Liam reached for the emergency phone mounted on the wall.

“Secure every exit,” he said. “Call the police.”

A sharp electronic click echoed through the corridor as the emergency department entered security lockdown.

Ethan turned toward the doors, but a hospital security officer blocked his path.

“This is a misunderstanding,” Ethan protested.

Liam stared at him.

“Then you won’t mind explaining the old medical reports.”

For the first time, Ethan looked genuinely afraid.

A nurse approached Liam carrying Claire’s damaged phone.

“The screen activated when we connected it to a charger.”

An automatic message glowed across the display.

ENCRYPTED FILE TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Claire forced out two words.

“Send… audit.”

Ethan’s face turned pale.

Before anyone could respond, a woman in a black business suit appeared at the trauma-room entrance. Corporate attorney Mara Bennett held a sealed folder beneath one arm.

She looked directly at Ethan.

“The emergency board meeting just ended,” she said. “You have been removed as chief executive officer.”

Ethan stared at her.

“You work for me.”

“No,” Mara replied. “I work for the company.”

Police officers appeared at the end of the corridor.

Liam looked toward them, then back at Ethan.

“And that,” he said quietly, “is only the first file.”
