THE NAME ON THE LUGGAGE TAG / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - The Empty Envelope)

The plan was simple enough to frighten everyone.

Brooke would go to the old freight depot.

She would carry the envelope containing blank paper.

She would not carry the real memory card.

Samuel had already copied its contents onto three separate encrypted drives.

Claire stayed home with Noah.

Emma stayed with her.

Evelyn coordinated from her office.

Brooke hated the arrangement.

"If Vanessa sees I'm alone, she'll know."

"Then don't be alone," Claire said.

Brooke looked confused.

Claire pointed toward the driveway.

Samuel's car would remain visible fifty yards from the depot.

Not close enough to interfere.

Close enough to make Vanessa wonder who else was watching.

At 7:02 p.m., Brooke entered the abandoned station.

The old platform lights were broken.

Wind pushed newspapers across the concrete.

Vanessa waited near a support column.

Richard Vale stood behind her.

Brooke stopped twenty feet away.

"Where's Caleb?"

Vanessa smiled.

"Safe."

"Show me."

"Give me the card."

"I want proof."

Richard spoke for the first time.

"You have become expensive, Brooke."

She looked at him.

"Where is my son?"

"With his father."

"Then why threaten him?"

"Leverage."

Brooke's face tightened.

Vanessa extended her hand.

"The card."

Brooke removed the envelope.

Vanessa frowned.

"What's that?"

"The amendment."

"And the card?"

"Inside."

Vanessa took one step forward.

Brooke stepped backward.

"No."

Vanessa's face hardened.

"What do you mean no?"

"I mean you don't get anything until I know Caleb is safe."

Richard checked his watch.

"This is becoming tedious."

Brooke looked at him.

"How many children?"

Richard stopped.

Vanessa stared at her sister.

"Don't."

Brooke continued.

"How many did you take?"

Richard smiled.

"Take is such an emotional word."

Brooke felt sick.

"How many?"

"Every transfer had documents."

"Forged documents."

"Administrative corrections."

"How many children?"

Richard looked bored.

"Enough."

Brooke had been instructed not to provoke him.

But she could not stop.

"Did the adoptive families know?"

"Some."

That single word changed everything.

Some.

Meaning others did not.

Brooke asked, "The couple today?"

Richard shrugged.

"They were promised a legally surrendered newborn."

Vanessa turned toward him.

"Stop talking."

Richard laughed.

"Why? Brooke has already decided she is a hero."

Brooke stared.

"What happened to the children whose mothers fought back?"

Vanessa grabbed the envelope.

Brooke did not resist.

Vanessa tore it open.

Blank paper fell onto the floor.

Her face changed instantly.

"You stupid little"

A sound interrupted her.

A phone ringing.

Not Brooke's.

Richard's.

He answered.

Listened.

Then looked at Vanessa.

"The house."

Vanessa's expression changed.

"What about it?"

"Someone's there."

Brooke felt her stomach drop.

Claire.

Richard turned and ran toward the side exit.

Vanessa followed.

Brooke pulled out her phone.

"Claire, answer."

No response.

She called again.

Nothing.

Samuel reached her seconds later.

"What happened?"

"The envelope worked, but Richard got a call. Someone is at Claire's house."

Samuel was already running toward his car.

Across town, Emma heard glass break.

She was in the nursery with Claire.

Noah had just finished feeding.

Both women froze.

Another sound came from downstairs.

The back door.

Emma whispered, "Stay here."

Claire grabbed her arm.

"No."

"Claire."

"No more separating."

They moved together into the hallway.

Claire held Noah.

Emma carried a heavy wooden lamp base.

They reached the staircase.

A man stood in the foyer.

Leonard Price.

Claire nearly dropped the baby.

Michael's former attorney looked older than she remembered.

Sweat covered his forehead.

"Claire."

She stared at him.

"Get out."

"I need to talk to you."

"You broke into my house."

"The door was open."

Emma laughed without humor.

"You shattered the glass beside it."

Leonard looked at Noah.

"I can fix this."

Claire felt rage rise.

"You sold my baby."

"No."

"You sold information about him before he was born."

"Claire, listen."

"Michael stopped trusting you."

Leonard's face twitched.

That told her enough.

"You knew about the amendment."

He looked toward the stairs.

"Where is it?"

Emma lifted the lamp base.

"Wrong answer."

Leonard's voice became desperate.

"If Richard gets that document, he'll destroy it."

"We already copied it."

He froze.

Claire continued.

"And we copied everything on Brooke's card."

Leonard sat down on the bottom stair.

For the first time he looked defeated.

"You don't understand what Richard is."

"Then explain."

Leonard rubbed his face.

"Years ago I represented a couple trying to adopt. Their case fell apart because of a technical issue. Richard fixed it."

"Illegally."

"I didn't know at first."

"But you kept working with him."

"He had records. Messages. Payments."

"Blackmail."

Leonard nodded.

Claire felt no sympathy.

"You still gave him my information."

"I thought he was only going to approach you about a private guardianship arrangement."

"While I was pregnant?"

Leonard looked away.

"You told him about Noah's trust."

Silence.

Emma took one step forward.

"Answer her."

Leonard whispered, "Yes."

Claire closed her eyes.

There it was.

Not an accident.

Not a misunderstanding.

A deliberate betrayal.

Michael had trusted Leonard once.

Claire had trusted him after Michael died.

And Leonard had turned that trust into a price.

Claire asked, "Why fake Michael's voice?"

"I didn't."

"Who did?"

"Richard."

"Using recordings you gave him."

Leonard nodded.

"What recordings?"

"Michael used voice messages when we worked on estate documents."

Claire felt sick.

Leonard continued.

"I kept archives."

Claire stared at him.

"You gave a stranger my dead husband's voice."

Before Leonard could answer, headlights swept across the front windows.

Emma looked outside.

A dark sedan stopped in the driveway.

Claire recognized it.

Vanessa.

And Richard.

Leonard stood so quickly he nearly fell.

"No."

Emma locked the front door.

Claire whispered, "They followed you."

Leonard backed away.

"No, no. They can't know I'm here."

Claire looked at him.

"They know everything."

Richard stepped out of the car.

Vanessa followed.

Neither approached the front door.

Instead Richard opened the trunk.

Claire could not see what he removed.

Then Leonard whispered four words that frightened her more than anything else he had said.

"They're not here for Noah."

Claire looked at him.

"Then why are they here?"

Leonard stared through the window.

"For the only evidence they can't replace."

May you like

His eyes moved toward the garage.

Michael's original amendment.
