THE NAME ON THE LUGGAGE TAG / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - The Mother Who Did Not Know She Was Chosen)

Rachel Evans lived twenty minutes from Claire.

She was twenty nine.

Her husband had left during the pregnancy.

Her parents were dead.

She worked as a receptionist at a dental clinic and had recently applied for county assistance during maternity leave.

Richard's notes identified her as low resistance.

The phrase made Claire furious.

Rachel had no idea she was being watched.

Daniel Mercer contacted her through official channels.

Claire did not attend the first meeting.

She wanted to.

But Samuel convinced her that appearing at a stranger's door with a newborn and a story about stolen babies might terrify rather than help her.

Rachel called Claire later that evening.

"Mr. Mercer said you went through something similar."

Claire looked at Noah sleeping nearby.

"Almost."

There was silence.

"Did they really try to take your baby?"

"Yes."

Rachel began crying.

Claire waited.

Finally Rachel whispered, "A woman came to my apartment yesterday."

Claire's heart tightened.

"What woman?"

"She said she worked for family services."

"Name?"

"Margaret Lawson."

Claire stood.

Margaret had not disappeared.

She had moved to the next target.

"What did she want?"

"She said because I'm alone after delivery, someone might need to stay with me temporarily."

Claire closed her eyes.

Same pattern.

"Did she give you anything?"

"Forms."

"Don't sign them."

"I didn't."

"Good."

Rachel hesitated.

"There's something else."

"What?"

"She already knew my baby's name."

Claire looked at Daniel.

He was listening through speakerphone.

"What is the name?"

"Benjamin."

Daniel checked Richard's spreadsheet.

The unborn child was listed as Baby Evans.

No name.

Meaning Margaret had obtained newer information.

The operation was still active.

Someone else was feeding them data.

Rachel said, "I only told the hospital."

Claire remembered Carla Jensen.

"Which hospital?"

"St. Matthew Regional."

Claire looked at Daniel.

Same hospital.

Within hours investigators identified two suspicious accesses to Rachel's prenatal records.

Both came from Carla Jensen's employee credentials.

But Carla had not worked that day.

Someone else was using her login.

The trail led to a workstation in the hospital billing office.

Surveillance records showed a man entering after hours.

Leonard Price.

Claire stared at the image.

"He's still lying."

Leonard had claimed Richard controlled him.

Claimed he wanted out.

Yet he had personally accessed Rachel's records.

Samuel confronted him.

Leonard broke within minutes.

He admitted he had been working both sides.

Helping Richard while quietly collecting information he hoped to use as leverage if the operation collapsed.

Claire felt almost relieved.

She had started wondering whether guilt should soften her judgment of him.

Now the answer was clear.

Leonard had always been protecting Leonard.

Michael understood him before anyone else did.

Leonard finally provided Richard's emergency contact number and the location of a second storage facility.

He also revealed something Vanessa had hidden from Brooke.

The prospective family waiting for Noah had paid seventy thousand dollars.

Not one hundred twenty five.

Richard planned to tell them the remaining fifty five represented legal and medical fees.

The trust theft would have been additional profit.

Claire asked, "Did that family know Noah wasn't surrendered?"

Leonard shook his head.

"No."

"You're certain?"

"They believed they were meeting a mother who had chosen them."

"Diane pretending to be me."

"Yes."

Claire thought of the crying woman outside the abandoned clinic.

The stuffed elephant abandoned on the pavement.

"What's her name?"

Leonard hesitated.

"Jennifer Ward."

"Her husband?"

"Matthew."

Claire wanted to meet them.

Samuel advised against it at first.

Then Jennifer contacted Claire herself.

Richard's records had exposed the truth.

Jennifer asked for only ten minutes.

They met in Samuel's office.

Jennifer Ward looked exhausted.

Her husband sat beside her.

The stuffed elephant was on the table.

Jennifer spoke first.

"I need you to know we didn't know."

Claire studied her.

"I believe you."

Jennifer immediately cried.

Matthew looked down.

"We were told you had chosen adoption before delivery."

Jennifer continued.

"They gave us letters."

Claire frowned.

"What letters?"

Jennifer opened a folder.

Three handwritten pages supposedly written by Claire.

They described financial hardship.

Grief after Michael's death.

Fear that Claire could not raise Noah alone.

The final page said she wanted him to have two parents.

Claire read every word.

The handwriting resembled hers.

The emotions did too.

Richard had constructed a fictional version of her from real details.

Claire handed the pages back.

"I never wrote these."

Jennifer nodded.

"I know."

"What happened at the clinic?"

Jennifer looked at Matthew.

"A woman came in pretending to be you."

"Diane."

"Yes. She wouldn't look at us."

Matthew said, "Then Vanessa called Richard into the hall. They started arguing. We heard your name. Something about you finding the luggage tag."

Claire understood.

Their confrontation on the patio had reached Richard.

Jennifer continued.

"When Diane came back, she told us the birth mother had changed her mind."

"That was it?"

"No."

Jennifer's expression hardened.

"Richard said we could still complete the placement if we increased the payment."

Emma, sitting beside Claire, whispered, "After he knew Claire had discovered them?"

Jennifer nodded.

"That's when we knew something was terribly wrong."

Matthew pushed a bank receipt across the table.

"We paid seventy thousand into escrow."

Samuel examined it.

"This account is connected to Richard."

"We don't care about the money," Jennifer said. "We care whether another family gets trapped."

Claire looked at the stuffed elephant.

"You bought that for Noah?"

Jennifer nodded.

"I didn't know his real story."

Claire touched its soft ear.

For a moment sadness eclipsed anger.

In another version of events Jennifer and Matthew might have been the people who unknowingly took Noah away.

They might have loved him.

Claire might have hated them.

Richard designed situations in which innocent people destroyed one another while he stayed invisible.

Claire pushed the elephant gently back.

"Keep it."

Jennifer shook her head.

"I can't."

"Then give it to the child you eventually bring home the right way."

Jennifer covered her mouth.

Matthew looked away.

Claire stood.

Before leaving, Jennifer handed Samuel one final document.

"Richard sent this yesterday."

It was a future placement schedule.

Names.

Dates.

Expected payments.

Rachel Evans was included.

So were three other pregnant women.

And at the very bottom was a name Claire recognized.

Emma Carter.

Claire stared.

Emma laughed nervously.

"That's impossible."

Claire looked at her cousin.

Emma's face slowly changed.

May you like

Because beside her name was a note.

Pregnancy unconfirmed.
