THE NAME ON THE LUGGAGE TAG / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - The Family Waiting at the Airport)

No one spoke for several seconds.

Claire heard the refrigerator humming.

Noah breathed softly against her chest.

Outside, Vanessa began pounding on the glass.

Brooke flinched.

Emma closed the blinds.

Claire wanted to scream.

Instead she asked the only question that mattered.

"What family?"

Brooke shook her head.

"I don't know their names."

"You said they paid."

"I heard Vanessa talking."

"When?"

"Last night."

"Where?"

"In the garage."

Brooke's voice became quicker, as though she feared losing the courage to continue.

"She said the couple had been waiting almost six years to adopt. She said Richard found babies whose mothers were unstable, alone, or too sick to fight."

Claire felt every word like a physical blow.

"Too sick."

Brooke nodded.

"Vanessa told me your case was perfect."

Emma's jaw tightened.

"Perfect?"

"Your husband is dead. Your mother lives in another state. You had complications after delivery."

Claire looked at Evelyn.

"Someone selected me."

Evelyn said nothing.

That was answer enough.

Brooke continued.

"I thought Vanessa was helping with paperwork. She told me the placements were private adoptions where the mothers had already agreed."

"But you saw Claire."

Brooke closed her eyes.

"I should have understood sooner."

Emma's voice sharpened.

"You packed the bag."

"I know."

"You watched her move Noah toward that dog."

Brooke began crying again.

"I know."

Claire touched Emma's arm.

Not because Brooke deserved comfort.

Because Claire needed information.

"What was the dog for?"

Brooke looked toward the floor.

"Vanessa wanted you frightened."

Claire frowned.

"Frightened of what?"

"Of your own house."

Evelyn understood first.

"They were creating evidence of an unsafe environment."

Brooke nodded.

"She said if the dog lunged or the bassinet tipped over, she could claim Noah was in immediate danger. Then she could remove him under emergency authority before anyone challenged the order."

Emma stared at her.

"She was willing to risk the baby to create evidence?"

Brooke's silence answered.

Claire felt something change inside her.

Until that moment fear had controlled her.

Now anger replaced it.

Cold anger.

Organized anger.

"Where is Richard Vale?"

"I don't know."

"How was Vanessa supposed to meet him?"

"She wasn't."

"Then who was meeting the family?"

Brooke pointed at the second luggage tag.

"The woman using your name."

Claire looked at it again.

"Who is she?"

"I only know her first name. Diane."

Evelyn pulled out her phone.

"Diane what?"

"I don't know."

"Age?"

"Maybe late forties."

Claire remembered the incorrect birth date.

Nineteen years older.

She read it aloud.

Evelyn typed quickly.

Emma stood behind her.

After less than a minute, Evelyn looked up.

"Diane Mercer."

Claire felt a strange recognition.

"Mercer?"

"You know her?"

"No."

Evelyn's face tightened.

"I do."

She turned the phone around.

The screen showed an old employee photograph.

A woman with short blonde hair smiled beneath the words County Family Services.

"She worked with Richard Vale."

Emma stared.

"Another former employee?"

"Yes."

"What happened to her?"

"She resigned during the investigation that got Richard fired."

Claire looked from the photograph to the travel tag.

"So she's pretending to be me."

"Possibly."

Brooke whispered, "Vanessa said Diane would carry Noah through security because the identity documents matched the booking."

Claire looked at Evelyn.

"How could she get through security using my name?"

"She would need identification."

Claire remembered the first night.

Vanessa asking where important documents were kept.

She handed Noah to Emma.

"Hold him."

Then Claire ran upstairs.

Her bedroom filing cabinet stood open.

The drawer containing her passport was empty.

Her driver's license backup card was gone.

So was Michael's death certificate.

She returned downstairs holding the empty document envelope.

"She took everything."

Brooke looked horrified.

"I didn't know that."

Emma nearly lunged toward her.

"Stop saying that."

Claire raised one hand.

"Emma."

Her cousin stepped back.

Evelyn made several calls.

While she spoke, Claire opened Vanessa's abandoned grocery tote from the pantry.

Inside she found receipts.

Most were ordinary.

Formula.

Milk.

Paper towels.

Then she found a receipt from a copy and printing center.

Three color scans.

Two laminated cards.

Passport photographs.

Another receipt was from a medical supply store.

Claire unfolded it.

Infant formula.

Sterile gauze.

Disposable thermometer.

Travel bottle warmer.

Everything in the bag.

Emma looked over her shoulder.

"They planned every detail."

Brooke whispered, "There was another bag."

Claire turned.

"What?"

"A smaller black one. Vanessa gave it to someone this morning."

"Who?"

"A courier."

Evelyn ended her call.

"What was inside?"

"I don't know."

Claire remembered Noah's birth certificate.

"Documents."

Evelyn nodded grimly.

"Likely."

Emma looked at the clock.

5:03 p.m.

"What time is the flight?"

Claire checked the luggage tag.

8:40 p.m.

Three hours and thirty seven minutes.

Evelyn spoke carefully.

"I have contacted airport security and the relevant authorities. They will be watching the reservation."

Claire looked at Noah.

"Cancel it."

"We should not."

Emma stared at her.

"Why not?"

"Because if the reservation remains active, Diane may still appear."

Claire understood.

"And lead us to the family."

"Or to Richard."

Claire looked toward the patio.

Vanessa was gone.

The chair was empty.

Claire rushed to the window.

The side gate stood open.

"Vanessa."

Emma pulled the curtain wider.

"She's gone."

Brooke turned white.

"She'll call Richard."

Claire grabbed her phone.

Evelyn stopped her.

"Do not chase her."

"What if she warns them?"

"She probably already has."

Brooke whispered something.

Claire turned.

"What did you say?"

Brooke looked at the clock.

"The airport wasn't the first meeting place."

Evelyn stared at her.

"What was?"

Brooke's voice shook.

"A private clinic near the airport."

"Why?"

"I heard Vanessa say the child had to be examined before the transfer."

Claire went cold again.

"What clinic?"

Brooke gave them the address.

Evelyn typed it into her phone.

Then she stopped.

Her face changed.

"No."

"What?"

Evelyn turned the screen toward them.

The address belonged to a building that had officially closed eighteen months earlier.
