THE NAME ON THE LUGGAGE TAG / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Name That Should Not Have Been There)

The dog was growling before Claire Bennett even opened the back door.

It was not the ordinary warning bark she had heard a hundred times from the neighbor's German shepherd. This was lower, rougher, closer. It vibrated through the glass door like something alive beneath the floorboards.

Then she heard Emma scream.

"Get your filthy hands away from him!"

Claire did not remember crossing the nursery.

One moment she was standing beside Noah's empty crib, staring at the blanket that should have been wrapped around her two week old son. The next, she was throwing open the back door and running onto the sunroom patio.

The sight stopped her heart.

The chained dog stood near the portable bassinet, teeth exposed, leash pulled tight.

Baby bottles rolled across the stone floor. Diapers had been scattered beside torn packages of medical gauze. An open travel bag sat near the wall, already packed with Noah's clothes.

And in the center of everything stood Emma.

Her cousin was pressed against the patio wall, one arm wrapped tightly around Noah. A thin line of blood ran from the skin beside Emma's eye. Noah was crying against her cream sweater.

Vanessa Hale stood directly in front of them.

Brooke Hale crouched beside the open bag.

For half a second nobody moved.

Then Claire saw Vanessa reach toward her baby.

Something inside her snapped.

Claire crossed the patio in three strides and drove her forearm into Vanessa's shoulder and the side of her head.

"Get the hell away from my son!"

Vanessa stumbled sideways.

Brooke jumped backward.

Emma tightened both arms around Noah.

"Claire, she was taking him," Emma shouted. "They packed his things."

Vanessa recovered quickly.

"You have no idea what you're talking about."

Claire moved between her and Emma.

The dog kept growling.

"You were supposed to watch him for twenty minutes."

Vanessa's face remained strangely calm.

"I was protecting him."

"By packing his clothes?"

Brooke stood.

"We should leave."

Vanessa turned on her.

"Shut up."

That was when Claire noticed the luggage tag.

A white plastic tag had become twisted around the lower part of the dog's chain near the open travel bag.

She bent down and pulled it free.

Vanessa's face changed.

Only slightly.

But Claire saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

Claire flipped the tag over.

NOAH BENNETT

The name was printed in black letters.

Under it was a flight number.

A departure time.

And a destination.

Claire stared.

Her mouth went dry.

The flight was scheduled to leave that evening.

She looked at the packed bag again.

Bottles.

Formula.

Diapers.

Noah's extra onesies.

His infant medication.

Everything required to travel with a newborn.

Her son had not been packed for an afternoon outing.

He had been packed to disappear.

Claire looked back at Vanessa.

"Why is my son's name on this?"

Vanessa said nothing.

Emma stepped closer.

"Claire."

Her voice had changed.

Claire followed Emma's gaze.

There was another tag beneath the travel bag.

Brooke tried to step on it.

Too late.

Emma kicked the bag aside.

Claire grabbed the second tag.

It showed the same flight.

The same destination.

But the passenger name was not Vanessa Hale.

It was Claire Bennett.

For several seconds Claire could not understand what she was reading.

Then she noticed something even worse.

The date of birth printed beneath her name was wrong.

The passenger was nineteen years older than Claire.

Vanessa reached for the tag.

Claire pulled it away.

"Who is using my name?"

"Give me that."

"Who is using my name?"

Vanessa's calm expression finally broke.

"Claire, you need to listen to me."

"No. You need to explain why someone is flying out tonight using my name with my baby."

Brooke started crying.

Vanessa spun toward her.

"Don't."

But Brooke was already shaking.

"I told you this was going too far."

Emma stared at her.

"What was going too far?"

Brooke covered her mouth.

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

"Get inside."

Claire stepped in front of them.

Nobody moved.

The dog's chain rattled.

Noah cried harder.

Emma whispered, "We need to call someone."

Claire nodded.

Vanessa laughed.

It was a short, ugly sound.

"Go ahead."

Claire froze.

Vanessa's confidence returned.

"Call anyone you want."

"What is that supposed to mean?"

Vanessa looked at Noah.

Then at Claire.

"You really haven't seen the paperwork yet."

Claire felt cold despite the afternoon sun.

"What paperwork?"

Vanessa took one slow step backward.

"The paperwork that says Noah Bennett is no longer legally in your custody."

Silence fell across the patio.

Even Emma seemed unable to breathe.

Claire stared at the woman who had been allowed into her home three days earlier under the title temporary family guardian.

Then she looked at her newborn son.

And for the first time since the back door had opened, Claire understood something far more frightening than attempted kidnapping.

Vanessa had not come to steal Noah without a plan.

She believed she had documents proving that she was allowed to take him.
