Chapter 9 - The Cost of Silence
The criminal case lasted eight months.
Marcus eventually admitted to forging Evelyn’s signature, attempting to transfer her property, abandoning her at the motel, and creating false evidence against Kendra.
Viola admitted that she had provided Evelyn’s records, packed her suitcase, removed her identification, and supported the plan to accuse Kendra.
Both accepted plea agreements after the recovered phone messages made a trial too risky.
Marcus received a prison sentence and was ordered to repay the money he had taken.
Viola received a shorter sentence because she cooperated, but the judge rejected her attorney’s claim that she had acted only out of maternal fear.
“A parent’s love does not permit the destruction of another person,” the judge said.
Otis was not charged with the original scheme. However, he admitted giving false information during the early investigation.
He resigned from the community board where he had served for twelve years and began attending counseling.
For several months, he sent letters to Kendra.
She did not answer the first seven.
The eighth contained no excuses.
I chose the easiest story because the truth required me to admit I had failed you for years.
I believed the loudest person instead of the honest one.
I cannot ask you to forget what I did.
I only want you to know that I finally understand it.
Kendra showed the letter to Evelyn.
“You do not owe him forgiveness,” Evelyn said.
“I know.”
“You also do not have to decide today.”
Kendra folded the letter and placed it in a drawer.
That was the freedom she had never possessed in her family.
She could choose.
She could wait.
She could protect her peace without explaining it.
Several weeks later, she agreed to meet Otis in a public park.
He looked older.
“I am sorry,” he said.
Kendra studied him carefully.
“An apology does not rebuild trust.”
“I know.”
“It only opens the door to the possibility.”
