Chapter 6 - Take the Blame
The police investigation began the following morning.
Marcus submitted altered emails suggesting Kendra had approved the motel stay. He claimed she had used her banking knowledge to prepare the property documents.
Viola supported his statement.
Otis repeated what Viola told him.
Within hours, Kendra had changed from witness to suspect.
Claire remained calm.
“They are trying to overwhelm the investigation with competing stories.”
“Can it work?”
“Only if we let them control the evidence.”
Detective Ruiz asked the entire family to provide devices and financial records voluntarily.
Kendra agreed.
Marcus refused.
Viola claimed she had lost her phone.
That evening, she appeared outside Kendra’s apartment.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
“Marcus could go to prison.”
“He committed crimes.”
“He made a mistake.”
“He abandoned Grandma.”
“He panicked.”
“He forged her name.”
“He was desperate.”
Every answer protected him.
Kendra opened the apartment door wider but did not invite her inside.
“What do you want from me?”
Viola took a folded paper from her purse.
It was a prepared confession.
The statement claimed Kendra had arranged Evelyn’s motel stay and created the false property documents without Marcus’s knowledge.
Viola held out a pen.
“You have a respected career. No criminal history. Your attorney can negotiate.”
Kendra stared at her.
“You want me to confess to something Marcus did.”
“You are stronger than he is.”
“That is why you always choose me to sacrifice.”
Viola’s face tightened.
“Families protect each other.”
“No. In this family, everyone protects Marcus.”
“If you refuse, your father may never forgive you.”
Kendra folded the confession in half and tore it once.
Then again.
“Tell Marcus I saved every message.”
Fear flickered across Viola’s face.
It lasted less than a second.
But Kendra saw it.

Her mother was hiding something else.
