Chapter 1 - The Golden Son

Six weeks earlier, Kendra had still believed her family was difficult but repairable.
Marcus had always been the center of the Hale household. He was three years younger than Kendra, charming when he wanted something and wounded whenever anyone challenged him.
As children, Marcus broke windows and blamed neighborhood kids. He spent money from Otis’s wallet and claimed Kendra had taken it. When he failed two college classes, Viola called the professors unfair.
Kendra learned early that telling the truth did not guarantee anyone would believe her.
Still, she built a life far from the family drama.
At thirty-two, she worked as a compliance investigator for a regional bank. Her job required patience, attention to detail, and the ability to recognize when numbers told a different story from people.
Marcus often mocked her work.
“You stare at spreadsheets all day,” he once said. “That isn’t a real career.”
Yet whenever his business plans failed, he called Kendra for help.
His newest project was a luxury property company called Hale Urban Development. He claimed wealthy investors were waiting to fund him. He only needed temporary access to their grandmother Evelyn’s empty house as collateral.
Evelyn was seventy-eight and recovering from hip surgery. She had been staying with Viola and Otis while her home was renovated.
At least, that was what Kendra had been told.
One Thursday evening, Marcus called.
“I need you to sign something as a family witness,” he said.
“What kind of document?”
“Just renovation permission. Grandma already agreed.”
“Then why can’t she sign it?”
There was a pause.
“She’s tired, Kendra. Stop making everything difficult.”
Kendra refused.
Two days later, Viola called and accused her of humiliating Marcus.
“He is trying to build a future,” Viola said. “You should support your brother.”
Kendra almost apologized.
Then she remembered Marcus’s pause.
It was too long.

Too careful.
The kind of pause people used when replacing the truth with something more convenient.
