Chapter 5 - The Family Meeting

Claire advised Kendra to gather evidence before confronting anyone.

They obtained an emergency order preventing the sale of Evelyn’s home. They documented the forged signature and preserved the motel security footage.

Kendra also recovered messages from an old family tablet connected to Viola’s account.

One message from Marcus read:

She refused again. We need to move her before Kendra gets involved.

Viola replied:

Your sister always thinks she is smarter than everyone. I will handle her.

Another message mentioned a prepaid phone.

Claire printed every conversation.

“Why would my mother risk everything for him?” Kendra asked.

“Sometimes people protect the person who needs them most,” Claire said. “Marcus has trained her to believe his survival depends on her.”

“That does not excuse it.”

“No. It explains the pattern. It does not erase the choice.”

Three days later, Viola invited Kendra to a family meeting.

Marcus sat beside her at the dining table, dressed in a navy jacket and wearing the confident smile he used when pretending nothing could touch him.

Otis stood near the fireplace.

“Your grandmother has accused us of terrible things,” Viola began.

“She told the truth.”

Marcus leaned forward.

“Grandma is confused.”

“We found her at a shelter.”

Otis looked startled, but Viola interrupted before he could speak.

“The recovery center transferred her without informing us.”

Kendra placed a copy of the motel receipt on the table.

Marcus’s smile disappeared.

“You paid for three nights,” she said. “You left her there without identification.”

Marcus looked at Viola.

Viola looked at Otis.

Then Marcus changed tactics.

“You have always hated me.”

“This is not about whether I like you.”

“You want to see me fail.”

“You abandoned Grandma and tried to steal her house.”

Otis struck the mantel with his palm.

“Enough.”

Marcus pointed at Kendra.

“She handled the care arrangements. She told me where to take Grandma.”

The lie came easily.

Too easily.

Viola immediately nodded.

“Yes. Kendra organized everything.”

May you like

Otis stared at his daughter.

And just as he had when they were children, he believed Marcus first.
