Chapter 7 - The Burner Phone

Claire requested a search warrant based on the forged property documents, motel footage, and recovered tablet messages.

Police searched Marcus’s apartment and the Hale family home.

They found shredded drafts of Evelyn’s signature in Marcus’s office. They also recovered a key to the Sunrise Motor Lodge and copies of Evelyn’s medical records.

But the prepaid phone was missing.

Detective Ruiz believed it contained communications Marcus had intentionally kept away from his usual accounts.

Kendra remembered Viola’s strange behavior during her surprise visit.

Her mother had blocked the guest bedroom.

Not because Evelyn was resting there.

Because something was hidden there.

Kendra told Ruiz about a loose floorboard beneath the guest-room dresser. Otis had repaired it several times when Kendra was young.

Police returned with another warrant.

The phone was exactly where Kendra suspected.

Its messages had been deleted, but technicians recovered most of them.

Marcus had used the phone to communicate with Viola for almost two months.

They discussed the forged deed, the motel, and a plan to accuse Kendra if anyone discovered Evelyn’s disappearance.

One message from Viola read:

She works in compliance. People will believe she knew how to do it.

Marcus replied:

Dad will believe us. He always does.

There were also messages about money.

Viola had received thirty thousand dollars from an account controlled by Marcus. In exchange, she had helped him access Evelyn’s records and imitate her signature.

Claire called Kendra after midnight.

“We have enough.”

“For Marcus?”

“For both of them.”

The next morning, Detective Ruiz asked the family to return to the station.

Marcus did not appear.

His lawyer claimed he was ill.

Viola and Otis arrived together.

Kendra came with Claire and the original evidence folder.

Before the interview began, Otis demanded that Kendra withdraw her accusations.

When she refused, he knocked the folder from her hands.

Its metal edge scratched her forearm.

Chairs fell. Papers flew.

May you like

And Viola shouted the sentence that finally ended the family illusion.

“Take the blame for Marcus, or you are no longer my daughter!”
