Chapter 8 - The Invisible House)

They left the mansion through the greenhouse.

Marissa knew a maintenance gate Victor had not yet locked.

Caleb could barely walk.

Danielle supported him while Marissa carried Liam.

Rain had begun falling across the property.

The north orchard had been abandoned when Danielle was seventeen.

Victor wanted to remove it and build a guest pavilion.

Eleanor had refused.

After she died, the project was somehow forgotten.

Now Danielle wondered whether her mother had protected the land for a reason.

The trees formed twisted shadows beneath the gray afternoon sky.

Liam held Danielle's hand.

"Why is it called the invisible house?"

"Because when Aunt Michelle and I were little, Grandma used to bring us here when we wanted to hide."

"From Grandpa?"

Danielle looked at him.

Sometimes children found the truth before adults were ready to say it.

"Sometimes."

Caleb stumbled.

Marissa caught him.

He pulled away.

"Don't touch me."

She released him immediately.

"I'm sorry."

"Stop saying that."

"I haven't said it."

"You look like you're saying it."

Marissa accepted that.

They reached the cottage.

Small.

Stone walls.

Green wooden door.

No lights.

Danielle knocked.

Nothing.

Caleb stepped closer.

"Michelle?"

Silence.

He pounded harder.

"Michelle."

A floorboard creaked inside.

Everyone froze.

Then a woman's voice said.

"Who is with you?"

Caleb's face collapsed.

"Michelle."

The door opened three inches.

A pale face appeared.

Long brown hair.

Thin.

Eyes red from exhaustion.

Danielle could not breathe.

"Michelle."

The door flew open.

Her younger sister stood there.

Alive.

For one second no one moved.

Then Caleb crossed the distance between them.

Michelle threw herself into his arms.

He almost fell.

She held him anyway.

Caleb buried his face against her shoulder and sobbed.

Danielle covered her mouth.

Three months of imagining bodies.

Roadside graves.

Hospitals.

Rivers.

Anonymous phone calls.

And Michelle was standing ten feet away.

Michelle looked over Caleb's shoulder.

"Dani."

Danielle crossed the room and wrapped both of them in her arms.

For several minutes no one spoke.

Liam eventually squeezed between them.

"Aunt Michelle?"

Michelle dropped to her knees.

"Oh my God."

He hugged her.

"You disappeared."

"I know."

"That's bad."

A broken laugh escaped her.

"Yes."

"You should've told Mom."

Michelle looked at Danielle over his shoulder.

"I tried."

Danielle nodded.

"I know."

Marissa remained outside.

Michelle saw her.

Everything changed.

She stood.

"What is she doing here?"

Caleb stepped back.

"Michelle."

"No."

Michelle grabbed a metal fireplace poker.

Marissa raised both hands.

"I'm not armed."

"You took Caleb."

"Yes."

"You told Victor where we were."

"I told him where Caleb was. I didn't know where you were."

Michelle looked ready to strike her.

Danielle stepped between them.

"We don't have time."

"You brought her here."

"She helped us get out."

"After helping put him in."

"I know."

Michelle's eyes filled with fury.

"Do you?"

Caleb touched her arm.

"We need her right now."

Michelle looked at him.

His face told her how much he hated saying it.

She lowered the poker.

"Inside."

The cottage was not abandoned.

Batteries powered lamps.

Canned food lined shelves.

A laptop sat on the kitchen table beside stacks of documents.

Danielle looked around.

"You've been living here for three months?"

"Not the whole time."

"Where else?"

"Motels. A church shelter. Evelyn's old cabin for a week."

"Why didn't you contact me directly?"

Michelle laughed bitterly.

"Because every time I tried, Dad knew."

Danielle looked at Marissa.

Michelle continued.

"I sent you six messages from burner phones. Within hours someone appeared near wherever I had called from."

"Victor's security filter."

"I thought it was you."

Danielle stared at her.

"What?"

"I thought you were helping him."

The words hurt more than Danielle expected.

Michelle saw it.

"Dani, I had no idea who to trust."

"You thought I'd help Dad kidnap Caleb?"

"No. I thought maybe you didn't know what he was doing but your phone, your car, your security were all compromised."

Danielle looked at Marissa.

Marissa nodded.

"She's right."

Michelle turned toward Caleb.

"What did he do to you?"

Caleb shook his head.

"Later."

Her eyes moved over his face.

"No."

"Michelle."

"What did he do?"

Caleb took her hands.

"He kept asking about the rook."

She closed her eyes.

"I should've taken it with me."

"Then he would've caught you too."

She looked at Danielle.

"You found it?"

"Yes."

"And the queen?"

"Yes."

Michelle exhaled.

"Mom."

Danielle nodded.

"We opened the archive."

"Then you know."

"Some of it."

Michelle looked toward the laptop.

"Not the worst part."

Danielle felt a chill.

"What is the worst part?"

Michelle opened a file.

A financial chart appeared.

Dozens of companies connected through layered ownership structures.

At the center stood Harrington Global.

Michelle pointed.

"Dad's Continuity Network isn't just an investment system."

"What is it?"

"It's a pressure system."

Danielle frowned.

Michelle opened another document.

Private background reports.

Politicians.

Judges.

Journalists.

Business rivals.

Employees.

Personal debts.

Affairs.

Medical histories.

Family secrets.

Danielle looked at Marissa.

Marissa looked horrified.

"I never authorized this."

Michelle said.

"Your teams collected security intelligence. Victor copied it into a separate database."

Danielle scrolled.

She found her own name.

Then Michelle's.

Then Caleb.

Then Liam.

She stopped.

A file had been created for her six-year-old son.

School.

Friends.

Teachers.

Medical appointments.

Temperament.

Potential vulnerabilities.

Danielle's face changed.

Michelle saw it.

"He profiles everyone."

Danielle looked at Marissa.

"Did you know?"

"No."

The answer came instantly.

Danielle believed her.

That did not erase what Marissa had done.

But it changed what happened next.

Michelle opened one final folder.

"Victor scheduled a closed board meeting tomorrow morning."

Danielle read the agenda.

Emergency Continuity Resolution.

Temporary removal of Danielle Harrington as chief executive.

Appointment of Victor Harrington as executive chairman.

Authorization to restructure family voting interests.

Danielle's pulse slowed.

Victor had already planned the endgame.

"He expected me to discover something."

Michelle nodded.

"He knew eventually you would."

"Then why leave Caleb alive?"

"Because Dad still didn't know where I hid the master copy."

"What master copy?"

Michelle looked at her.

"The file that proves every crime."

Danielle stared at the laptop.

"Where is it?"

Michelle's eyes moved toward Liam.

The boy was exploring a shelf of dusty books.

Michelle lowered her voice.

"I mailed it to someone."

"Who?"

"Your husband."

Danielle went completely still.

"My husband is dead."

May you like

Michelle looked at her with tears in her eyes.

"I know."
