Chapter 13 - Eleanor's Voice)

The recorder was old.

Thomas had a technician bring equipment from the evidence team.

Victor sat beneath guard near the opposite wall.

He said nothing.

Danielle and Michelle sat beside each other at the piano.

The technician inserted the cassette.

Pressed play.

Static.

Then Eleanor Harrington's voice filled the room.

Danielle closed her eyes.

Eight years disappeared.

Her mother's voice was weaker than Danielle remembered.

But unmistakable.

"If Danielle and Michelle are hearing this, then Victor found the amendment."

Victor looked down.

Eleanor continued.

"I discovered three months ago that someone asked Dr. Weber to increase the sedatives I receive before our legal meetings."

Danielle's eyes opened.

Michelle gripped her hand.

"My illness is real. The pain is real. The medication is necessary. But the dosage was changed without my approval on two occasions when Victor asked me to sign documents."

Danielle turned toward her father.

Victor did not look up.

Eleanor's recorded voice continued.

"I confronted him. He denied ordering it."

Victor whispered.

"I did."

Thomas glanced at him.

The tape continued.

"I don't know whether he ordered it or whether someone believed they were helping him. I only know I became too confused to read during meetings where changes to the family trust were presented."

Danielle felt sick.

Michelle whispered.

"He drugged her."

Victor looked up.

"No."

Eleanor continued.

"The forged amendment was not signed by me."

There it was.

Clear.

Undeniable.

"I created the original trust because I love Victor, but love has become dangerous inside this house. He has begun to believe disagreement is betrayal."

Victor closed his eyes.

"If he ever finds this recording, I hope he remembers the man he was before fear taught him to treat his family like property."

Danielle felt tears fall.

"I do not want my daughters to hate their father."

Michelle began to cry.

"I want them to survive him."

The tape crackled.

"Danielle, you will be tempted to protect the family name."

Danielle covered her mouth.

"Don't."

A broken laugh escaped Michelle.

Their mother knew them.

Even now.

"Michelle, you will be tempted to run."

Michelle lowered her head.

"Don't."

Eleanor's voice softened.

"Stand beside each other."

The tape ended.

Nobody moved.

Victor looked toward the recorder.

Danielle wiped her tears.

"Did you increase her medication?"

Victor shook his head.

"No."

"Did you know it was happening?"

His silence answered.

"Who?"

Victor looked at Thomas.

"I want an attorney."

Danielle almost laughed.

After years of demanding everyone else explain themselves, Victor Harrington finally wanted silence.

Thomas stepped forward.

"Victor Harrington, you are being detained in connection with kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, financial fraud, conspiracy, obstruction, and the death of Daniel Mercer."

Victor stood.

He looked at Danielle.

"You know what happens to Harrington Global if this becomes public."

Danielle stood too.

"Yes."

"Thousands of employees."

"Will still have jobs."

"The board will panic."

"I'll replace them if necessary."

"Markets will punish weakness."

"Then they'll recover."

"You sound confident."

Danielle looked at her father.

"You taught me."

Something almost like pride appeared in his eyes.

That hurt more than anger would have.

Agents placed restraints on Victor.

He looked at Michelle.

"I never wanted Caleb hurt."

Michelle stared at him.

"You kept him underground for seventy-eight days."

"I told Marissa to feed him."

Michelle laughed through tears.

"And that's the defense you're choosing?"

Victor looked at Danielle one last time.

"I loved you."

Danielle believed him.

That was why her answer mattered.

"Love isn't the part you get judged on."

Victor's face tightened.

She continued.

"It's what you did with it."

Agents led him away.

The front doors closed behind him.

For several seconds Danielle and Michelle stood in the foyer.

The same fireplace remained open.

The hidden staircase visible behind it.

Caleb entered with Liam.

Michelle ran to her husband.

Liam walked toward Danielle.

"Is Grandpa leaving?"

Danielle crouched.

"Yes."

"For how long?"

She looked at the doors.

"A long time."

"Because he did bad things?"

Danielle nodded.

"Yes."

Liam thought about that.

"Did he love us?"

Danielle's throat tightened.

"Yes."

The boy frowned.

"Then why did he do bad things?"

Danielle looked at her son.

There was no simple answer.

So she did not give him one.

"Sometimes people love someone and still make choices that hurt them. Love doesn't make the bad choice disappear."

Liam looked toward the fireplace.

"Is Uncle Caleb going back downstairs?"

Caleb laughed weakly.

"Never."

Liam nodded.

"Good."

Then he hugged Danielle.

She held him tightly.

Over his shoulder, Danielle looked at Marissa standing near the entrance with an agent.

Marissa had agreed to surrender voluntarily.

Before leaving, she approached Caleb.

He tensed.

She stopped several feet away.

"I won't ask you to forgive me."

"Good."

"I told myself I was following orders because I believed you had hurt Michelle."

Caleb looked at her.

"You stopped believing that after the first week."

Marissa's face tightened.

"Yes."

"And you still left me there."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Marissa took a long breath.

"Because admitting Victor was wrong meant admitting I had already become part of something terrible."

Caleb stared at her.

"That's the first honest thing you've said to me."

She nodded.

"I'm sorry."

He did not forgive her.

He did not have to.

Marissa turned toward Danielle.

"I'll testify."

Danielle nodded.

"You should."

The agent led her away.

Michelle watched.

"What happens to her?"

"That's for the court."

"And Dad?"

"Same."

Michelle looked surprised.

"You aren't going to use the company to influence anything?"

"No."

Victor would have.

That was precisely why Danielle would not.

Caleb sat carefully on the staircase.

He looked exhausted.

Michelle sat beside him.

Danielle looked around the foyer.

The mansion was quiet again.

But it no longer felt empty.

It felt exposed.

Walls opened.

Doors unlocked.

Secrets dragged into light.

Danielle walked toward the fireplace.

For years it had been decoration.

Then prison.

Now it was evidence.

Liam stood beside her.

"What are you going to do with it?"

Danielle looked down at him.

"Tear it out."

He considered that.

"Can we keep the secret stairs?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because homes shouldn't need secret prisons."

Liam nodded.

"Can we build a slide instead?"

Danielle finally laughed.

A real laugh.

The first in months.

"We'll discuss it."

The investigation was only beginning.

But the Harrington family's silence had ended.
