Chapter 7 - Ten Minutes)

Danielle did not shout.
That was what Victor expected.
She simply stared at the screen until Liam noticed the camera.
"Mom?"
Danielle moved closer.
"I'm here."
Liam tried to stand.
Victor's hand remained on his shoulder.
"Stay seated."
The boy looked irritated rather than frightened.
"Why?"
"Because your mother and I are having a disagreement."
"Mom says disagreements don't need locked doors."
Victor's jaw tightened.
Danielle said.
"Liam, listen to me. Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Good."
Victor leaned toward the camera.
"The keys."
Danielle looked at him.
"What happens if I give them to you?"
"We destroy the archive together and return to our lives."
Caleb laughed from behind her.
Victor's eyes shifted.
"So Caleb is listening."
"He is."
"Caleb has manipulated both my daughters."
Caleb stepped into view.
"You kept me in a basement."
"I kept you alive."
"You want gratitude?"
Victor ignored him.
Danielle crossed her arms.
"If I destroy the archive, Michelle stays missing."
"Michelle chose to leave."
"Then why imprison Caleb?"
"Because he knew where she went."
"And he didn't tell you."
"No."
"Seventy-eight days and he didn't tell you."
Victor's expression changed slightly.
Danielle recognized the emotion.
Admiration.
Victor respected resistance even while trying to destroy it.
"Your ten minutes are running."
Danielle looked toward Liam.
"Put him outside the room."
"No."
"Then there is no deal."
Victor smiled faintly.
"You were never good at bluffing."
Danielle raised the blue rook.
Then she placed it on the metal desk.
Marissa immediately understood.
She drew her boot back.
Victor's smile vanished.
"Marissa."
Marissa looked at the camera.
"I know what happens to me when this is over."
Victor's voice hardened.
"You were paid to follow orders."
"I was paid to protect this family."
"You imprisoned Caleb."
"Yes."
"And now you want morality?"
Marissa flinched.
Victor continued.
"Don't confuse guilt with courage."
Danielle looked at Marissa.
"He's trying to keep you ashamed because ashamed people are easier to control."
Victor's eyes returned to Danielle.
"You sound like your mother."
"Thank you."
His face changed.
That hurt him.
Good.
Danielle picked up the rook again.
"Liam goes free or I break both keys."
Victor's hand tightened on Liam's shoulder.
Danielle saw it.
So did Liam.
The boy looked up at his grandfather.
"You're hurting me."
Victor immediately released him.
Something flickered across Victor's face.
Danielle saw an opening.
"You're not going to hurt Liam."
"You don't know what I'm willing to do."
"Yes, I do."
Victor remained still.
Danielle leaned closer to the camera.
"You spent your entire life convincing yourself every terrible thing you did was for this family. Hurting him would prove it was never about family."
Victor stared at her.
"Send him out."
Silence.
"Send him out, Dad."
For several seconds nobody moved.
Then Victor opened the library door.
"Go to the kitchen."
Liam hesitated.
"Mom?"
"Go, sweetheart."
He ran.
Danielle exhaled for the first time in what felt like minutes.
Victor closed the door.
"Now bring the keys."
Danielle smiled.
"No."
Victor's expression went blank.
"I said Liam goes free. I didn't say you get anything."
Caleb stared at her.
Marissa almost smiled.
Victor did not.
"You're making a very serious mistake."
"You taught me negotiations."
"Do not play games with me."
"I'm not."
Danielle placed the rook into her pocket.
"Now I'm going to find Michelle."
For the first time, Victor lost control.
"No."
The word came out too quickly.
Danielle froze.
He knew where Michelle had gone.
Or at least he knew where she might go.
"You've already searched the invisible house."
Victor's eyes changed.
Caleb looked at Danielle.
"What?"
She continued.
"Mom's old gardener's cottage."
Victor said nothing.
That was confirmation enough.
Danielle turned toward the archive exit.
Victor's voice followed.
"She isn't there."
"Then you won't mind me checking."
"Danielle."
She stopped.
His next words were quieter.
"Michelle is dangerous."
Danielle slowly turned back toward the screen.
"To whom?"
"To herself. To Caleb. To you."
"Why?"
"Because she found pieces of something she doesn't understand."
"Then explain it."
Victor leaned closer.
"You think the Continuity Network is theft. It isn't. Governments are unstable. Markets are fragile. Information is controlled by people with no loyalty to anyone beyond the next election. I built something that can survive them."
"You stole my shares to build it."
"I used assets that would have been wasted."
"They weren't yours."
"I created Harrington Global."
"Mom created half of it with you."
"Your mother wanted to divide everything between two daughters who had never run a global company."
Danielle's eyes hardened.
"I have run it for six years."
"Under my protection."
"No."
"Everything you are exists because I built the structure around you."
Danielle felt a strange calm.
This was the man beneath the father.
Not a monster.
Something more ordinary and therefore more frightening.
A man who believed love entitled him to ownership.
"You didn't protect us."
Victor's eyes narrowed.
"You managed us."
She cut the connection.
Marissa looked at her.
"Security will be moving toward this room."
"How long?"
"Two minutes."
Caleb was struggling to stand.
"You need to leave me."
"No."
"I'll slow you down."
Danielle put his arm around her shoulder.
"Then we'll be slow."
They climbed from the archive.
Marissa checked the corridor.
"North service stairs."
Danielle looked toward the family wing.
"Liam."
"He'll go to the kitchen."
"Victor knows that."
Marissa swore softly.
They ran.
At the landing Danielle heard a child scream.
"Mom!"
She changed direction instantly.
Liam was at the far end of the corridor.
A security guard held his arm.
Not violently.
But firmly.
Danielle stopped.
The guard looked terrified.
"Mrs. Harrington, Mr. Harrington ordered me to take Liam to the east wing."
Danielle walked toward him.
"Release my son."
"I have orders."
"So do you believe you work for my father or for the family?"
The guard hesitated.
Marissa stepped beside Danielle.
"Release him."
The guard looked at his former boss.
Then let go.
Liam ran to Danielle.
She dropped to her knees and held him.
"I'm okay," he whispered.
Danielle closed her eyes.
"I know."
"Grandpa lied."
She looked at him.
"About what?"
"He said Aunt Michelle hated us."
Caleb's face changed.
Liam continued.
"He said that's why she left."
Danielle touched his cheek.
"Your aunt loves you."
"Then where is she?"
Danielle looked toward the windows.
Beyond them lay acres of Harrington property.
May you like
At the northern edge, hidden behind trees, stood an old stone cottage no one had used in years.
"Maybe closer than we think."
