Chapter 4 - Your Father)

The first sound after Caleb said Victor's name was Danielle's breathing.
Slow.
Measured.
Intentional.
She had learned long ago that fear became dangerous when people saw it.
Her father had taught her that.
She hated the irony.
"Tell me exactly what happened."
Caleb looked at Marissa.
"Not while she's here."
Marissa's voice was low.
"You don't understand what Michelle did."
Caleb surged forward despite his weakness.
"What Michelle did?"
Danielle put a hand against his chest.
"Caleb."
"Ask her where my wife is."
Danielle turned.
"Where is Michelle?"
Marissa looked at her.
"I don't know."
"Did you help imprison Caleb?"
Silence.
"Answer me."
"Yes."
The word barely echoed.
Danielle had known it already.
Hearing it still hurt.
"Why?"
"Because your father told me Caleb was involved in Michelle's disappearance."
Caleb laughed bitterly.
"You watched him chain the door."
"I never chained you."
"You brought the food."
"Because if I didn't, he said no one would."
Danielle stared at her.
"You expect that to make this better?"
"No."
"How long?"
Marissa looked toward Caleb.
"Seventy-eight days."
Danielle felt sick.
"Seventy-eight days."
"Danielle."
"You stood beside me while I cried over him."
"I know."
"You helped investigators search for him."
"I know."
"You checked my son's bedroom every night while my brother-in-law was beneath our feet."
Marissa finally looked away.
Caleb whispered.
"Victor needed something from me."
Danielle crouched beside him.
"What?"
"The blue rook."
She went still.
"Michelle had it."
"What's inside it?"
"Not inside. It's a key."
"To what?"
Caleb closed his eyes.
"Your mother's trust archive."
Danielle looked at him in confusion.
"My mother didn't have a trust archive."
"Yes, she did."
"Her estate was settled eight years ago."
"No, Danielle. Parts of it were."
Caleb looked at the ceiling as if gathering strength.
"Michelle found an old billing entry from Evelyn Shaw while she was auditing the foundation. It referenced a Harrington Family Voting Trust created by Eleanor Harrington."
Danielle's mother.
"That doesn't make sense."
"It does if someone hid it."
Danielle already knew the answer.
"My father."
Caleb nodded.
"Michelle started digging. She found references to an original trust agreement that gave you and Michelle equal beneficial ownership of fifty-two percent of Harrington Global after your mother's death."
Danielle stared at him.
"That's impossible. Dad holds the controlling interest."
"Because the document everyone has been using is an amendment."
"What amendment?"
"One giving Victor lifetime voting control."
Danielle's mind raced.
She had seen that document.
She had signed board resolutions based on it.
"Mom signed it."
Caleb looked at her.
"No."
The word landed harder than a shout.
"What?"
"Michelle found the original notary journal."
Danielle could barely speak.
"She believed the amendment was forged?"
"She proved it."
Danielle stood.
For years Victor had controlled Harrington Global with absolute authority.
He had appointed directors.
Removed executives.
Approved mergers.
Blocked Danielle from expanding certain divisions.
Told both daughters their mother's trust required him to retain control.
If the amendment was forged, Victor's entire empire had been built on a lie.
"What does that have to do with kidnapping you?"
"Michelle copied everything."
"Where is she?"
"I don't know."
Danielle grabbed his shoulders.
"Caleb."
"I don't know."
His eyes filled with tears again.
"We were supposed to leave together. She called me from the lake property. She said Victor knew."
"What happened?"
"When I arrived, her car was gone. There was blood on the dock."
Danielle's stomach twisted.
"You told police there was no blood."
"I never reached the police."
She stared at him.
Caleb looked toward Marissa.
"Her people took me before I got off the property."
Danielle turned slowly.
Marissa's face had gone pale.
"I was told he attacked Michelle."
"Did you see the blood?"
"No."
"Did you see Michelle?"
"No."
"Then what did you see?"
"Victor's report."
Caleb laughed.
"His report."
Marissa snapped.
"I had served this family for twelve years. Victor had never once ordered me to hurt anyone."
"Until he did."
"Yes."
Caleb looked at Danielle.
"He kept asking where Michelle had hidden the rook."
"Why?"
"Because the original trust archive can only be opened with two physical keys. Victor has one. Michelle took the other."
Danielle remembered the photograph.
Michelle holding the blue rook.
"Where is it now?"
"I don't know."
A speaker crackled.
Then Victor's voice filled the room.
"Danielle."
The trapdoor above slammed shut.
The lock engaged.
Danielle looked upward.
Victor said calmly.
"Step away from Caleb."
Danielle rushed up the stairs.
The door would not move.
"Liam."
Marissa spoke into her radio.
Nothing.
Victor had disabled it.
Danielle turned toward the speaker.
"Where is my son?"
"Safe."
"Where?"
"Come upstairs and we'll talk."
"You locked the door."
"I'll open it when you're calm."
Danielle laughed once.
It contained no humor.
"You imprisoned my brother-in-law for seventy-eight days and you're asking me to be calm."
"You don't know what Caleb has done."
"Then tell me."
"Not over a speaker."
"Put Liam on."
A pause.
Then Liam's voice.
"Mom?"
Danielle gripped the stair railing.
"Liam, where are you?"
"Grandpa's library."
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Is anyone with you?"
"Grandpa."
Victor returned.
"Come upstairs alone."
Danielle looked at Marissa.
"He wants me without you."
Marissa's expression tightened.
That frightened Danielle more than anything.
"Why?"
Marissa swallowed.
"Because I'm not supposed to be here anymore."
Caleb looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
Marissa stared at the locked door.
"Victor called me an hour ago."
"And?"
"He told me that once Danielle found this room, I was to disappear."
Danielle watched her.
"You were disposable."
Marissa nodded slowly.
"I think we all are."
Caleb looked toward the mattress.
"There's another way out."
Danielle turned.
"What?"
He pointed to the far wall.
"Victor used it when he didn't want Marissa's guards to see him come down."
Marissa looked stunned.
"I didn't know."
Caleb crawled toward the mattress and shoved it aside.
Behind it was a steel panel.
Danielle helped him pull it open.
A narrow service tunnel disappeared into darkness.
"Where does it lead?"
Caleb looked at Marissa.
"Into the old wine cellar."
Danielle removed her expensive heels.
She picked up Marissa's handgun.
Then she helped Caleb stand.
"We're going upstairs."
Caleb shook his head.
"Victor has Liam."
Danielle slipped the weapon into the back of her waistband.
"Exactly."
Marissa watched her.
"What's the plan?"
Danielle looked into the tunnel.
"My father taught me never to enter a negotiation unless I know what the other person actually wants."
"And what does he want?"
Danielle thought about the blue rook.
Her mother's trust.
Michelle.
Caleb.
Liam.
Then she understood.
"He doesn't want to kill us."
Caleb looked unconvinced.
"How is that comforting?"
"It isn't."
May you like
Danielle's eyes hardened.
"It means he still needs something."
