Chapter 10 - Daniel Knew)

Danielle read the letter twice.

Then a third time.

The others remained silent inside the parked vehicle.

Daniel had written only one page.

Dani,

If this reaches you because something happened to me, do not let your father convince you I was paranoid.

I found what he is building.

And I made the mistake of confronting him alone.

Victor believes fear justifies control. He believes the world is becoming dangerous enough that one family must become powerful enough to survive outside the rules.

I told him I would tell you.

He told me you would choose him.

I told him he had never understood you.

If I'm wrong about what he is capable of, burn this letter and laugh at me.

If I'm right, protect Liam from learning that love means obedience.

You are stronger than the version of you Victor tried to build.

Daniel

Danielle lowered the page.

Liam was asleep against Caleb's shoulder.

For that she was grateful.

Michelle whispered.

"I'm sorry."

Danielle folded the letter carefully.

"He knew."

"Yes."

"He confronted Dad."

"Apparently."

Marissa started the engine.

"We shouldn't stay here."

Danielle did not move.

"What company serviced Daniel's helicopter?"

Michelle answered.

"Creston Aeronautics."

"Who owned it?"

"A holding company."

"Who owns the holding company?"

"I traced it to another shell."

"Who signed the payment?"

Michelle looked at her.

"Victor's private finance director. Nathan Cole."

Danielle knew Nathan.

He had worked for her father twenty-two years.

"Is he still employed?"

"Yes."

Danielle looked at Marissa.

"Where does Nathan live?"

"Greenwich."

"Call him."

Marissa stared.

"Now?"

"Now."

Nathan answered on the fourth ring.

His voice became nervous when he heard Danielle.

"Mrs. Harrington."

"Nathan. I need to ask you about Creston Aeronautics."

Silence.

Danielle knew.

"Nathan?"

"I don't know that name."

"You approved a four hundred thousand dollar payment."

"I approve hundreds of payments."

"This one was made six days before my husband's helicopter crashed."

Another silence.

Then Nathan hung up.

Michelle whispered.

"That sounded innocent."

Marissa checked her tablet.

"His phone just started moving."

"Where?"

"Toward the airport."

Danielle looked at her.

"Can you stop him?"

"Not legally."

"Can you keep him from leaving?"

Marissa thought.

"I can alert federal investigators that a potential material witness in an active kidnapping case is attempting international travel."

Danielle stared at her.

"Do it."

Marissa made the call.

Then they headed toward Harrington Global headquarters.

Michelle looked surprised.

"The board meeting isn't until tomorrow."

Danielle held up the encrypted drive.

"If Dad knows the drive exists, he'll shut down every system before morning."

"We can't open it from headquarters. He controls the network."

"We aren't going to open it there."

"Then why go?"

Danielle looked toward the city skyline.

"Because my office has something Dad forgot about."

Years earlier Daniel had installed an independent legal archive server in Danielle's executive suite.

Victor had hated it.

Daniel insisted privileged documents should never sit on Harrington Global's central network.

After Daniel's death, Danielle stopped using it.

But the server remained.

When they arrived, the building appeared quiet.

Too quiet.

Marissa checked access logs.

"Victor revoked your credentials."

Danielle stared at the scanner.

"He removed the CEO from her own building."

Michelle held up the original trust papers.

"Technically he removed the owner."

Danielle almost smiled.

They entered through the underground parking entrance using a mechanical emergency key.

The elevator was disabled.

They climbed thirty-eight floors.

Caleb nearly collapsed twice.

At the executive suite Danielle unlocked an old side door.

Her office looked exactly as she had left it.

Marissa stood guard.

Michelle inserted the flash drive into Daniel's independent server.

A password prompt appeared.

Danielle stared.

"What password?"

Michelle shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Daniel encrypted this."

Liam, now awake, walked toward the desk.

"What's that?"

"Something your dad made."

Liam looked at the screen.

"What does it want?"

"A password."

"What did Dad use?"

Danielle smiled sadly.

"He had hundreds."

"Use my birthday."

Danielle froze.

Daniel used Liam's birthday for nothing because he believed birthdays were too obvious.

But he had one private phrase.

The first words he said after Liam was born.

Danielle typed them.

HELLO LITTLE LION.

Access granted.

Michelle laughed through tears.

Files appeared.

Financial records.

Audio recordings.

Videos.

Contracts.

Private network documents.

And one folder titled CRESTON.

Danielle opened it.

A scanned maintenance order appeared.

Replace rotor coupling before Mercer flight.

Another document followed.

Internal instruction.

Use reclaimed part. Destroy original inspection record.

Danielle's vision blurred.

Michelle touched her shoulder.

Then they opened an audio file.

Victor's voice.

Nathan's voice.

Daniel's death sealed between them.

Nathan said.

"The part could fail."

Victor answered.

"Could?"

"Under stress. High probability."

"And the pilot?"

"Will believe it passed inspection."

A pause.

Nathan whispered.

"Victor, this is murder."

Victor's answer was perfectly calm.

"No. It is risk."

Danielle stopped the recording.

No one spoke.

She stood.

Walked toward the window.

The city lights stretched below.

Her husband had not died because of weather.

Not because of bad luck.

Her father had made a decision.

And Daniel had paid for it.

Michelle started crying.

Caleb wrapped an arm around her.

Marissa looked physically ill.

Danielle turned back.

"Copy everything."

Michelle nodded.

"Where?"

"Everywhere."

They created encrypted copies.

Cloud accounts.

External drives.

A secure legal server.

Thomas Hale.

Evelyn Shaw.

Two investigative journalists Daniel had trusted.

Danielle scheduled automatic release at nine the next morning unless she cancelled it.

Victor could no longer bury the evidence by destroying one file.

Marissa looked at the clock.

"He's going to know."

Danielle nodded.

Her phone rang.

Victor.

She answered.

"Hello, Dad."

His voice was quiet.

"You opened Daniel's drive."

"Yes."

For several seconds only silence connected them.

Then Victor said.

"Come home."

"No."

"We need to speak privately."

"You murdered my husband."

Michelle closed her eyes.

Victor inhaled.

"I did not murder Daniel."

"I heard the recording."

"You heard a conversation without context."

"What context makes sabotaging a helicopter acceptable?"

"He was going to destroy everything."

"Everything meaning your control."

"Everything meaning the structure that keeps this family safe."

Danielle almost laughed.

"You killed the father of my child."

"I made a decision I have regretted every day since."

That stopped her.

Not because it softened anything.

Because of how easily he said it.

A regret.

As if Daniel's life were a bad acquisition.

Victor continued.

"I loved him."

"No."

"I did."

"You don't get to use that word."

"Danielle."

"You imprisoned Caleb. You hunted Michelle. You stole Mom's company. You killed Daniel."

Her voice remained calm.

"And tomorrow morning, I am taking everything from you."

Victor's breathing changed.

Then he said.

"You think this ends in a boardroom?"

Danielle looked toward Marissa.

Victor continued.

"Look outside."

Marissa ran to the window.

Black vehicles were entering the underground garage.

"How many?"

"Six."

Victor said.

"Come home, Danielle."

The line disconnected.

Marissa drew a spare weapon from the security cabinet.

Michelle looked at her.

"What's happening?"

Marissa checked the hallway camera.

"Victor's private response team just entered the building."

Caleb stood despite his weakness.

Danielle looked at the evidence copying across the screen.

May you like

Eighty-six percent.

Then the lights went out.
