Chapter 7 - The Price of One Small Life

Sarah did not scream.
The fear was too large for sound.
She stood beside the empty bed with one hand pressed against her mouth while Alejandro read the note again. His face revealed nothing, but the paper trembled once between his fingers.
Rocco searched the room. The window was locked from inside. The ventilation grate had been removed and replaced. A narrow maintenance shaft ran behind the wall, connecting the guest rooms to the old nursery wing.
Bianca had left Emma with two guards and a nurse. Both guards were found unconscious inside the nursery. The nurse was missing.
Her name was Celia Ward.
Doctor Crane had hired her three months earlier.
Sarah turned on Bianca.
You said she was safe.
Bianca accepted the words without defending herself.
I was wrong.
Sarah grabbed the front of Bianca's blouse.
My daughter is four.
Alejandro stepped between them, not to protect Bianca but to force Sarah to look at him.
We will find her.
Do not promise me things you cannot control.
I control more than the people who took her believe.
Then why is she gone?
The question cut through every title he possessed.
Alejandro had no answer.
Rocco found a transmitter sewn inside the stuffed rabbit. It had been inactive for months, then activated at 2:17 that morning. Daniel had not placed it there. The stitching was recent.
Someone had opened the rabbit before Alejandro carried it through the fire, inserted the blood vial and transmitter, then returned it to Emma's backpack.
The child had been carrying a beacon through the mansion.
The kidnappers had always known exactly where she was.
Gabriel traced the signal to three locations at once: an abandoned school, a marina warehouse, and a private clinic outside the city. Decoys.
Luca argued they should divide their forces.
Alejandro refused.
That is what they want. Three targets, three teams, one weakened estate.
What if Emma is at one of them? Sarah demanded.
She is not.
How can you know?
Because Crane wants me to choose publicly. He wants to watch which location I value most. The real destination is connected to something he thinks I have not discovered.
Alejandro placed the two sun keys on the desk.
The complete symbol matched a faded emblem embossed on the back of the St. Anne's photograph. Gabriel searched corporate registries and found an abandoned nonprofit called Solace House, founded twenty-nine years earlier by Isabella Moretti and Doctor Elias Crane.
Its original mission had been treatment for children with rare immune disorders.
Its final registered address was a mountain estate two hours north.
The property had supposedly burned down twelve years ago, the same year Isabella died.
Satellite records showed recent construction beneath the ruins.
That is where he took her, Alejandro said.
Sarah was already moving toward the door.
Alejandro caught her arm.
You are not coming.
She struck him across the face.
Every guard in the room tensed.
Alejandro released her.
You will not tell me to wait while armed men rescue my child.
Crane may use you against her.
He already is.
He will use your fear.
Then show me how not to let him.
Alejandro looked at the woman who had spent eleven months cleaning rooms in his house, unnoticed by everyone who believed uniforms made people invisible. Her hands shook, yet her eyes did not move from his.
He nodded once.
You ride with me.
Before they left, Gabriel intercepted an encrypted call sent to one of Alejandro's private numbers.
The screen showed no caller identification.
Alejandro answered on speaker.
Doctor Crane's voice filled the study.
Bring the sun keys to Solace House. Bring no police. No aircraft. No more than four people.
Let me hear my daughter, Sarah said.
A pause.
Then Emma's voice came through, small and frightened.
Mommy?
Sarah gripped the desk.
I am here, baby.
The bad doctor took my backpack.
Crane moved the phone away.
She is unharmed. For now.
What do the keys open? Alejandro asked.
A promise your mother broke.
You poisoned me.
I tested you.
With a substance that stopped my breathing.
And the child saved you, as predicted.
Sarah went still.
Predicted?
Crane chuckled softly.
Daniel understood. That is why he died trying to remove her from the pattern.
What pattern? Alejandro demanded.
Bring the keys.
The call ended.
They traveled in two armored vehicles: Alejandro, Sarah, Rocco, and Gabriel in the first; Luca and two guards following at a distance despite Crane's limit. Bianca remained at the mansion to control communications.
Rain became snow as the road climbed. Sarah watched dark pines pass beyond the window.
Alejandro opened a case and offered her a compact pistol.
I do not know how to use that.
Then learn now.
He showed her the safety, grip, and trigger discipline. She hated the weight. She accepted it anyway.
Rocco reviewed the limited plans for Solace House. Most of the building had been declared destroyed, but old utility maps showed tunnels beneath it, including an underground surgical ward.
Gabriel studied the kidnapping note.
There is something wrong with the wording.
Alejandro looked over.
Crane wrote that you must decide how many people die to get her back. But he instructed you to bring four people. He expects casualties before we enter.
Rocco checked the road ahead.
At that moment, headlights appeared behind them.
Three black vehicles accelerated through the snow.
Not Luca's.
The first rammed the rear of their SUV.
Rocco drew his weapon. Gabriel ducked. Sarah held the seat with one hand and the pistol with the other.
A second vehicle pulled alongside. Its rear window lowered.
Alejandro pushed Sarah down as gunfire shattered the glass.
Their driver swerved. The SUV struck the guardrail, spun, and stopped sideways above a steep ravine.
Alejandro fired through the broken window. One pursuing car veered into the snowbank.
The second attacker collided with Luca's vehicle behind them.
The third stopped fifty yards away.
A man stepped out holding a rocket launcher.
Rocco shouted for everyone to move.
There was nowhere to go except the ravine.
Sarah looked at the snowy darkness below.
Alejandro opened the door.
Jump.
The rocket fired.
They threw themselves over the guardrail as the SUV exploded.
Sarah tumbled through brush and ice, losing the pistol. Alejandro caught her coat before she slid farther. Rocco landed hard nearby. Gabriel disappeared into the trees.
Above them, armed men approached the burning wreck.
Sarah lifted her head.
Where is Gabriel?
A voice answered from behind her.
Right here.
Gabriel stood between two trees, holding his gun on Alejandro.
May you like
His limp was on the correct side now.
I am sorry, he said. But Crane promised to tell me where my son is buried.
