Chapter 6 - The Grave That Held No Mother

They returned to the mansion before dawn.

Alejandro went directly to the chapel, where a marble plaque honored Isabella Moretti, beloved mother, devoted wife, taken too soon. No body lay beneath the family mausoleum. Isabella had supposedly died in a private clinic in Switzerland, and her ashes had been sealed in a silver urn.

Alejandro had been thirty. Luca twenty-six. Bianca had arranged the memorial. Doctor Crane had signed the foreign medical documents.

Now every fact felt rehearsed.

Bianca entered the chapel wearing the same silver blouse, though smoke had stained one sleeve.

You sent for me?

Alejandro handed her the photograph from St. Anne's.

She looked at it for too long.

You have seen this before, he said.

No.

You are lying.

Bianca sat in the front pew.

Sarah remained near the doors. Rocco stood beside her, watching every movement.

Bianca touched the image of Isabella's note.

Twelve years ago, your mother learned that Doctor Crane was running an illegal medical program through St. Anne's. Wealthy families paid to erase records, alter parentage tests, and secure treatments unavailable through lawful channels.

What kind of treatments?

Bone marrow, blood products, experimental immune therapies. Some donors were adults. Some were not.

Sarah's stomach turned.

Children?

Bianca nodded.

Alejandro's face became still in the dangerous way that preceded violence.

Why did you never tell me?

Your mother made me promise.

My mother was dead.

No. Bianca looked up. She disappeared.

The chapel seemed to contract.

Luca entered behind them, having overheard enough to understand.

Where is she?

Bianca's eyes filled.

I do not know.

Alejandro crossed the aisle and seized the back of the pew.

Start at the beginning.

Bianca explained that Isabella had discovered secret patient ledgers tied to the Moretti shipping network. Their father, Vittorio, had unknowingly transported medical containers for Crane and several investors. When Isabella confronted Crane, he threatened to expose evidence that would send both her sons to prison for crimes committed in their names.

She agreed to disappear in exchange for the destruction of those records.

But the records were not destroyed.

Daniel Parker found part of them years later while repairing refrigeration equipment at a Moretti warehouse.

Why would he write that my mother traded something? Alejandro asked.

Because disappearance was not the only price, Bianca said.

She traded access to a genetic registry.

Luca went pale.

The papers about our paternity.

Bianca nodded.

Crane wanted the Moretti family bloodline mapped. Your father carried a rare immune marker. It made compatible donors valuable for a therapy his investors were developing.

Sarah clutched Emma's bracelet.

What does that have to do with my daughter?

Bianca looked at her with pity.

Daniel's mother was Vittorio Moretti's younger sister.

Sarah stared.

Daniel never knew. His mother was adopted as an infant and raised under another name. Isabella discovered the connection when Crane began tracing extended relatives.

Emma is a Moretti blood relative, Alejandro said.

Yes.

The words changed the room.

Not because they gave Alejandro ownership over the child. Sarah would have fought anyone who suggested that. But because they explained why Daniel had been terrified, why Emma's hospital bracelet pointed to a pathology sample, and why someone had followed a maid and her daughter for nearly a year.

What was taken from Emma? Sarah asked.

Bianca shook her head.

I do not know.

Emma had suffered unexplained anemia during her first months. Doctors called it a nutritional problem. She had received transfusions and repeated tests. Sarah remembered signing forms while exhausted, trusting white coats she could barely see through tears.

Doctor Crane had been the consulting specialist.

Alejandro turned to Rocco.

Bring him here.

Crane was gone.

His room was empty. A guard assigned to watch him had been found unconscious in a pantry. The doctor's car remained behind the locked gates, but an old ambulance used by the estate clinic was missing.

The second attempt had never been the fire.

The fire had been an escape.

Rocco ordered roadblocks through every contact he controlled. Gabriel called airport officials. Luca sent men to the river docks.

Alejandro walked to the urn in the chapel alcove.

He lifted it from its stand and smashed it against the stone floor.

Gray ash spilled around a metal object.

A small key.

Sarah compared it to Daniel's brass key. They were identical except for one engraved symbol: half of a circle on each.

When placed together, the two keys formed a complete sun.

Bianca whispered, Your mother said that if both keys were ever reunited, it meant Crane had come for the child.

Alejandro looked toward the chapel doors.

At that exact moment, the mansion alarm began to scream.

Rocco's radio erupted with overlapping voices.

The east wing had been breached.

Bianca ran first.

Sarah was faster.

She raced through the corridor, struck the guest-room door with both hands, and found the bed empty.

Emma's blanket lay on the floor.

Her pink backpack was gone.

On the pillow sat the stuffed rabbit, its fabric chest cut open.

Inside was a tiny glass vial filled with blood.

May you like

And a note addressed to Alejandro.

You survived because of her. Now decide how many people must die to get her back.
