Chapter 10 - The Archive of Stolen Names

The temperature rose within two minutes.

Steel doors sealed every exit. Ventilation fans pushed hot air through the corridor. The wall displays counted down with clinical calm.

Nine minutes, thirty seconds.

Alejandro carried Emma. Sarah stayed beside him, one hand on her daughter's back. Luca and Gabriel searched the control room while Celia, conscious again, lay handcuffed to a pipe.

She claimed Crane had threatened her family.

No one had time to decide whether that was true.

The sun keys remained trapped in the transfer drawer behind the steel barrier. Luca found a maintenance route through the ceiling, but it was too narrow for an adult.

Emma looked up.

I can fit.

No, Sarah said immediately.

Alejandro agreed.

The child had already saved all of them twice. He would not send her into darkness.

But the temperature continued climbing.

Gabriel discovered that the sterilization sequence could be stopped only from the archive chamber. The chamber lay beyond the barrier. The vent shaft led directly above it.

Emma tugged Sarah's sleeve.

Daddy said brave is doing the scary thing when someone needs you.

Sarah closed her eyes.

She hated Daniel for leaving behind words that now sounded like permission.

Alejandro crouched.

You do not have to be brave for us.

Emma looked at him.

You went into the fire for Bunny.

That was different.

Why?

Because I am an adult.

Emma considered that with the seriousness only a child could give an obvious lie.

Adults are scared too.

The countdown reached seven minutes.

Sarah kissed Emma's forehead.

The shaft was twelve feet long and lit by small maintenance bulbs. Luca removed the grate and lifted Emma inside. He tied a phone to her wrist so they could see through its camera.

Crawl straight, Sarah said. Do not turn anywhere. When you reach the next grate, tell us.

Emma nodded, clutching her rabbit. Sarah tried to take it, but Emma refused.

Bunny is brave too.

She crawled.

Dust coated her pink dress. The metal grew warm beneath her knees. Through the phone, they watched the narrow tunnel shake each time the ventilation system surged.

Halfway through, Emma stopped.

There is a hole.

The shaft had partially collapsed. A gap opened into darkness below.

Can you cross it? Alejandro asked.

Emma stretched one hand to the opposite edge.

Too far.

The countdown showed five minutes, forty seconds.

Sarah fought panic.

Come back.

Emma looked down through the hole.

There is a ladder.

Gabriel found the old plan. The gap opened above a records room beside the archive. If Emma lowered herself, she could reach the ladder, but she would have to continue alone through an unknown room.

Come back, Sarah repeated.

Then a new voice came through Emma's phone.

A woman's voice.

Do not move, little one.

Everyone in the control room froze.

A pale hand reached up through the gap and steadied Emma's foot.

An elderly woman stood below wearing a gray sweater and white medical trousers. Her silver hair had been cut short. A scar crossed her temple.

Alejandro stared at the phone screen.

Mother?

The woman looked up toward Emma's camera.

Alejandro.

His knees nearly failed.

Isabella Moretti was alive.

She helped Emma descend into the hidden records room. Cameras in that room had been disabled years earlier, giving Isabella a place to hide inside the facility she once helped build.

She had lived between abandoned service areas, surviving on emergency stores and supplies stolen from Crane's staff. She had tried to escape many times. Crane kept her alive because only she understood the archive sequence.

There was no time for reunion.

Isabella led Emma to the archive chamber and instructed her to place both hands on a small scanner. Emma's bloodline marker activated the first lock. Isabella entered a code. The trapped sun keys released from the transfer drawer and slid through an internal channel into the archive.

Luca shouted through the phone.

The sterilization system.

Isabella inserted the keys and turned them together.

The countdown stopped at one minute, twelve seconds.

Cool air entered the corridors.

The steel barrier lifted.

Alejandro ran into the archive room.

For twelve years he had carried grief like a second skeleton. Now his mother stood before him, older, thinner, and alive.

He did not know whether to embrace her or demand an explanation.

Isabella decided for him.

She crossed the room and held his face in both hands.

My son.

Alejandro lowered his forehead to hers.

Only for a moment.

Then Emma ran to Sarah, and the room filled with motion again.

The archive walls contained hundreds of metal drawers. Each held records under false names: children, donors, recipients, politicians, judges, corporate leaders, and criminal families. Crane had not built a clinic. He had built a system of ownership through medical secrets.

Gabriel searched for Julian.

He found an active file.

Julian Voss had survived treatment, been assigned a new identity, and placed in a coastal town under surveillance. Crane had used him as leverage without ever revealing that the young man had built a life.

Sarah found Emma's file.

Most pages had been removed by Daniel. One remained.

It documented a procedure performed when Emma was six months old. Bone marrow had been collected without proper consent after Crane identified her as a rare match for an unnamed child.

Sarah's hands shook.

Who received it?

Isabella looked at Alejandro.

The recipient was not a child.

She opened another drawer.

Inside was Alejandro's medical file.

Four years earlier, after a shooting that the public never learned about, Alejandro had suffered marrow failure from contaminated treatment. He had recovered after an anonymous donor procedure arranged by Doctor Crane.

The donor had been Emma.

Alejandro stared at the page.

The child saved you once before, Isabella said. Daniel discovered the theft and spent the rest of his life trying to expose it.

Sarah could barely breathe.

You lived because they took something from my baby.

Alejandro looked at Emma, horror replacing every trace of authority.

I did not know.

Sarah believed him.

That did not make the truth smaller.

An alarm sounded at the far end of the archive.

Gabriel checked the exterior cameras.

Dozens of vehicles were approaching Solace House.

Not Crane's private guards.

Federal tactical teams.

Someone had alerted them.

Luca looked at Gabriel.

Did you?

Gabriel shook his head.

Isabella opened the final drawer in the archive.

It was empty except for a red telephone.

The telephone rang.

Alejandro answered.

A distorted voice said, Leave the archive and surrender the child. Otherwise every name in those drawers will learn that Alejandro Moretti possesses the evidence that can destroy them.

Outside, helicopters crossed the mountain sky.

Inside, hundreds of powerful people had just been given a reason to kill everyone in the room.
