Chapter 11 - The Men Who Arrived Wearing Badges

The first helicopter landed beyond the ruined walls.
Snow spiraled beneath its rotors. Black-uniformed agents poured out in disciplined lines, rifles raised. More vehicles blocked the mountain road. Floodlights swept across Solace House.
A voice boomed through loudspeakers.
Alejandro Moretti, exit the facility with your hands visible. Release all hostages. Any attempt to destroy evidence will be treated as an immediate threat.
Sarah looked around the archive.
Hostages?
Gabriel gave a humorless laugh.
Someone wrote the official story before they arrived.
Isabella moved toward a control panel hidden behind one drawer. She brought up external camera feeds. The agents wore federal insignia, but Alejandro recognized several faces among them.
One was Deputy Director Samuel Wren, head of a national organized-crime task force. Wren had spent seven years publicly promising to dismantle the Moretti empire.
His name appeared in Crane's archive.
Luca found the drawer and opened it.
Inside were records showing that Wren's daughter had received an illegal transplant at Solace House. The donor was listed only as Child 44. Payments had been routed through a defense contractor.
He is not here to arrest us, Luca said.
He is here to erase himself, Isabella replied.
Alejandro spoke into the facility intercom.
Deputy Director Wren, we have your daughter's file.
The loudspeaker fell silent.
Then Wren answered directly through the red telephone.
You have ten minutes to come out.
What happens in ten minutes?
A gas leak ignites. The ruins collapse. The country mourns several brave agents and condemns a criminal who murdered his own hostages.
Sarah tightened her arms around Emma.
You would kill a child to hide that you saved yours?
Wren heard her through the open line.
Mrs. Parker, I know exactly what was taken from your daughter. I also know what the Morettis did to your husband. Walk out with Emma now, and I will guarantee protection.
Alejandro shook his head.
Sarah did not trust Wren, but his words struck the wound already opened by the archive.
What did the Morettis do to Daniel? she asked.
Ask Alejandro where his men were the night your husband died.
She turned.
Alejandro's face changed.
There it was again. Not guilt exactly. Recognition.
Tell me.
Alejandro dismissed everyone with one look, but Sarah refused privacy. Emma remained against her. Luca, Isabella, and Gabriel stayed close enough to hear.
Alejandro spoke carefully.
Daniel contacted me to arrange a meeting at the warehouse. When I arrived, the building was on fire. My men found him near the loading bay, alive but badly injured.
You told me he died instantly.
I told you what the police report said.
Was he alive?
For eight minutes.
Sarah's voice broke.
Did you speak to him?
Yes.
What did he say?
He said Crane knew about Emma. He said there was a ledger inside the refrigeration unit. Then he made me promise that if anything happened to him, I would keep both of you away from the Moretti family.
Sarah stared at him.
You hired me.
I did not. Maribel did.
But you let me stay.
Because I believed the mansion was the safest place to watch you.
You broke the promise.
Yes.
Why did the warehouse burn?
Alejandro looked toward Luca.
My men set the fire.
Luca stepped forward.
After Daniel was found. We were trying to destroy a shipment tied to Crane before law enforcement arrived.
You destroyed evidence.
We did not know Daniel was inside when the order was given, Luca said.
Sarah's eyes filled with tears she refused to release.
Your world killed him, then hid the truth, then placed me inside the same house.
Alejandro accepted every word.
Yes.
Emma looked between the adults.
Did Mister Lion hurt Daddy?
No one answered quickly enough.
Alejandro crouched before her.
I made choices that helped bad people hide what happened to your father. I did not know he was there, but I should have told your mother the truth.
Emma hugged her rabbit.
Are you sorry?
Alejandro's voice became quiet.
More than I can explain.
Emma considered him with painful seriousness.
Then help Mommy.
Outside, Wren's countdown reached seven minutes.
Isabella began copying the archive onto encrypted drives. The process would take twelve minutes.
They did not have twelve.
Gabriel found an emergency drainage tunnel leading to a river gorge. It could carry Sarah and Emma out, but the exit lay beyond a vertical shaft too narrow for the archive cases.
Alejandro made the decision.
Sarah and Emma leave through the tunnel with Gabriel. Luca takes Mother. I remain and negotiate.
No, Luca said.
It is not a vote.
Sarah understood what he intended. He would keep Wren focused while the others escaped. He would likely die inside the facility he had unknowingly benefited from.
Part of her thought that might be justice.
Another part remembered him carrying the rabbit through fire.
Emma grabbed Alejandro's hand.
You come too.
I will follow.
That is a grown-up lie, Emma said.
Even Isabella smiled through her fear.
A sharp explosion struck the upper level. Dust fell from the ceiling. Wren had begun sealing exits early.
Gabriel led them to the drainage tunnel. Isabella carried two drives containing the most critical files. Luca supported her over broken steps.
At the tunnel entrance, Sarah turned.
Alejandro remained in the corridor behind them.
Come with us.
If Wren sees no one in the archive, he launches the gas immediately.
Then make him see someone.
Sarah looked at Celia, still handcuffed near the pipe.
They could not leave her to die. They also could not trust her.
Celia spoke quickly.
There is a surgical simulation system. Crane used holographic projections for training. The control is in the archive theater.
Gabriel understood first.
We can project Alejandro's image into the main corridor.
Wren will detect heat signatures.
Not if we trigger the thermal mannequins, Celia said.
Alejandro unlocked her cuffs.
If this is a trap, you die before the rest of us.
Celia nodded.
That is fair.
They activated six heated mannequins and projected moving silhouettes through the archive corridor. From outside, cameras would show Alejandro and several hostages barricaded within.
The real group entered the drainage tunnel.
Wren's countdown reached three minutes.
The tunnel sloped beneath the mountain. Water reached Sarah's knees. Emma rode on Alejandro's shoulders, one hand tangled in his hair.
Behind them, explosions collapsed Solace House.
The shock wave knocked everyone forward. The lights failed. Darkness swallowed the tunnel.
Then a steel gate dropped between the group.
Sarah, Emma, Alejandro, and Isabella were on one side.
Luca, Gabriel, and Celia were trapped on the other.
A red emergency lamp flickered.
Gabriel gripped the bars.
Keep moving. We will find another route.
The ceiling cracked above him.
Luca shoved a drive through the bars to Alejandro.
Take Mother. Protect the child.
Another collapse shook the tunnel.
The red light went out.

When it returned, the passage beyond the gate was filled with dust.
Luca, Gabriel, and Celia were gone.
