Chapter 13 - The Brother Who Came Back Wrong

Emma did not understand the danger.

Uncle Luca found me, she said.

Alejandro stepped between Sarah and the gun.

Let her go.

Luca's face was bruised. A bandage wrapped his left hand. Dried blood marked his collar. He looked like a man who had walked out of a grave and brought part of it with him.

I am not hurting her, he said.

Then move your hand.

Luca released Emma. Sarah pulled her away and checked every inch of her.

Alejandro kept his eyes on his brother.

Where is Gabriel?

Alive when I last saw him.

Celia?

Dead.

What happened in the tunnel?

Wren's men pulled us out through a secondary shaft. Gabriel and I were separated. Crane questioned me for two days.

How did you escape?

Luca smiled without warmth.

He let me.

Isabella came from the cabin holding a shotgun.

Luca saw her and nearly dropped his weapon.

Mother.

She did not lower the shotgun.

My son.

The reunion held no comfort. Crane had sent Luca for a purpose.

Luca reached inside his coat slowly and removed a small device. It displayed Emma's heart rate.

Sarah looked at her daughter.

Crane implanted a capsule beneath Emma's skin while she was at Solace House, Luca said. It contains a micro-reservoir of allergen and a radio trigger.

Sarah's hands flew to Emma's arms, neck, and shoulders.

Where?

Behind her left ear.

A tiny swelling hid beneath the hairline.

Emma touched it.

The nurse said it was a mosquito bite.

Alejandro's voice became lethal.

What does Crane want?

The archive drive and both sun keys delivered to St. Anne's tomorrow. If he does not receive them, he triggers the capsule.

Can it be removed?

Not safely without the extraction code. Disturbing it may release the contents.

Isabella lowered the shotgun slightly.

You came to take the child.

Luca's eyes filled with pain.

I came because Crane showed me the trigger work on another subject.

He held out a phone. The video showed an adult man in a hospital room. A technician activated a device. The man went into immediate anaphylaxis and died before doctors entered.

Sarah covered Emma's eyes, but the child had already seen enough to become quiet.

Alejandro asked, Why the gun?

Because you will refuse to surrender the archive.

You are right.

Sarah turned on him.

Alejandro.

If Crane gets the archive, he controls every victim again. He will never release Emma. He will create another condition, another threat.

That is my daughter.

And surrendering gives him the weapon he needs to hurt thousands of children.

Sarah slapped him again.

This time he caught her wrist, not in anger but because he saw the grief behind the blow.

I will not trade Emma, he said. I will make Crane believe I will.

Luca laughed bitterly.

You always believe you can outplay everyone.

And you always believe surrender is compassion.

At least I know when a life in front of me matters more than an empire.

Isabella stepped between her sons.

Enough. Crane built this moment for both of you. Alejandro, he depends on your pride. Luca, he depends on your guilt. Sarah, he depends on your fear. We do not give him any of the three.

They brought Emma inside and examined the swelling using Isabella's old medical equipment. The capsule was real. Its casing contained a wireless receiver and a liquid reservoir. Removing it required a surgeon and a shielded room to prevent remote activation.

St. Anne's had both.

The memorial became their only chance.

They revised the plan.

Luca would return to Crane and claim he had subdued Alejandro. He would deliver a decoy archive drive containing enough authentic files to pass an initial check. Sarah and Emma would enter through the staff wing. Isabella would disable hospital communications. Alejandro would reach the surgical floor through an ambulance bay using Gabriel's old credentials.

But Gabriel's role remained unknown.

At dusk, the burner phone rang.

Gabriel spoke.

He had escaped Wren's custody during transport. He had found Julian at the coastal town listed in the archive.

His son was alive, married, and unaware of his original identity.

Gabriel had watched him from across a street but had not approached.

Why not? Alejandro asked.

Because Crane built my betrayal around the belief that I was still Julian's father. I realized I had become a stranger willing to destroy other families for the right to reclaim mine.

Gabriel offered access codes for the memorial and the name of Wren's inside security chief.

Can we trust you? Sarah asked.

No, Gabriel said. Trust what I am trying to repair.

He agreed to meet them beneath St. Anne's at midnight.

Before Luca left for the city, Emma approached him with her stuffed rabbit.

Are you a bad man now?

Luca knelt, the question hurting more than Alejandro's accusations.

I did a bad thing because I was scared.

Did you hurt Mister Lion?

I pointed a gun at him.

Emma frowned.

Mommy says never point things at people unless they are bubbles.

Luca almost smiled.

Your mother is right.

Emma held out the rabbit.

Bunny can go with you so you are not scared.

Luca looked at the toy Daniel had given her, the same rabbit that had carried Crane's transmitter and blood vial.

He shook his head.

Keep Bunny safe for me.

After he left, Alejandro stood beside the dark road.

Isabella joined him.

You think he will betray us again, she said.

I think Crane made sure any choice Luca makes can be called betrayal.

And what choice will you make?

Alejandro looked through the cabin window at Sarah brushing Emma's hair away from the capsule behind her ear.

The one Daniel asked me to make four years ago.

Protect Emma.

Even from the Morettis.

Isabella heard the meaning.

You intend to dismantle the family organization.

Alejandro did not answer.

Across the lake, a red light blinked between the trees.

Once.

Twice.

May you like

Then vanished.

Someone had found the cabin.
