Chapter 9 - The Attorney's Warning

Callahan survived.

But he refused to explain what happened.

Emily visited him at the hospital.

His face was bruised.

His voice was weak.

“Where is Adrian?”

“Outside.”

“Do not let him in.”

Emily stared.

“Why?”

“Because I don't know who he is working for anymore.”

Adrian entered anyway.

Callahan immediately became silent.

Emily looked between them.

“You two know something.”

Callahan sighed.

“Your father left instructions.”

“What instructions?”

“If anything happened to me, you were to receive the USB.”

Emily pulled it from her bag.

“This?”

“Yes.”

“What is on it?”

“Everything Samuel found.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Don't open it here.”

Emily looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because we don't know if the device is safe.”

Callahan shook his head.

“It's not the USB we should fear.”

Emily frowned.

“Then what?”

“The file.”

“What file?”

Callahan looked directly at her.

“The file Samuel called Daughter.”

Emily's heart stopped.

“Why would he name a file after me?”

“Because it contains everything that happened to you before you were old enough to remember.”

Emily stared.

“My childhood?”

Callahan nodded.

Adrian looked away.

Emily noticed.

“You know what's in it.”

Adrian didn't answer.

“Adrian.”

He finally said:

“I know part of it.”

“What part?”

“The reason your father never told you the truth about your mother.”

Emily felt the room go silent.

“My mother?”

Callahan closed his eyes.

Adrian whispered:

“Your mother didn't leave us.”

Emily stared at him.

“What are you saying?”

Before he could continue, Callahan's monitor began alarming.

Nurses rushed into the room.

Adrian grabbed Emily's arm.

“We have to go.”

“Why?”

He looked toward the hospital corridor.

“Because someone just arrived asking for you.”
