Chapter 1 - The Funeral Nobody Expected

Three weeks earlier, Emily Whitlock had believed her life was finally becoming simple.
Simple did not mean happy.
It meant predictable.
After her divorce, she had returned to Columbus with two suitcases, a small amount of savings, and the uncomfortable knowledge that nearly everyone in her father’s social circle considered her marriage a failure.
Samuel Whitlock had never treated her that way.
He had called every Sunday.
He had asked whether she was eating properly.
He had complained that she sounded tired.
And whenever Emily apologized for coming home, he always gave the same answer.
“You are not coming home, Emily. You are coming to your father.”
That sentence had mattered more than she had ever told him.
Then Samuel died unexpectedly.
The funeral was held beneath a gray November sky.
Eleanor stood beside the grave wearing black designer clothes and an expression of controlled grief.
Adrian stood beside her.
Emily stood alone.
At least, that was how it felt.
People came to offer condolences, but their eyes always moved toward Eleanor and Adrian afterward.
Emily heard whispers.
She knew what they were saying.
The divorced daughter.
The difficult daughter.
The daughter who had supposedly abandoned her father.
None of it was true.
But she had learned that truth and reputation were rarely the same thing.
After the funeral, Eleanor approached her.
“You should leave tonight.”
Emily stared at her.
“I’m sorry?”
“This is a difficult time. You have your own life now.”
“This is my father’s house.”
Eleanor’s expression tightened.
“It was your father’s house.”
Adrian appeared behind her.
“Mother.”
“What?”
“Not here.”
Eleanor looked at Emily one final time.
“You will understand soon.”
Emily watched them walk away.
She did not know what Eleanor meant.
Not yet.
That evening, while Emily was packing a few things from her old room, she found a photograph tucked inside one of her father’s books.
It showed Samuel standing outside a warehouse.
Beside him was a man Emily did not recognize.
On the back, Samuel had written a date.
And three words.
Ask Callahan first.
Emily immediately called the number she remembered from her father’s desk.
The attorney answered on the fourth ring.
“Emily?”
“Yes.”
There was a pause.
“Where are you?”
“At Dad’s house.”
Another pause.
May you like
Then Callahan said quietly:
“Lock your bedroom door.”
