Chapter 7 - The Photograph
Emily couldn't sleep.
The photograph remained on her desk.
It had been taken from across the street.
She was standing outside the house.
But she remembered that day.
She had been visiting Samuel.
The photograph had been taken before she arrived.
Which meant someone had been watching the house.
Callahan confirmed it.
“Your father knew he was being watched.”
“Why didn't he tell me?”
“Because he was trying to protect you.”
Emily looked at the photograph again.
There was something in the background.
A black sedan.
She enlarged the image.
The license plate was partially visible.
Callahan recognized it.
“That vehicle belonged to Eleanor's assistant.”
Emily stared.
“Then Eleanor was watching Dad.”
“Possibly.”
“Why?”
Callahan sighed.
“There is something I didn't tell you.”
“What?”
“Samuel believed Eleanor had been meeting Thomas Reed before he disappeared.”
Emily felt a chill.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me?”
“Your father asked me not to.”
“Why?”
“Because he believed Eleanor wasn't the person behind everything.”
Emily stared at him.
“Then who was?”
Callahan reached into his briefcase.
He removed a second photograph.
It showed Samuel, Thomas, Eleanor, and another person standing outside the warehouse.
Emily recognized the fourth person immediately.
Adrian.
But Adrian was not looking at the camera.
He was looking at Thomas.
And Thomas appeared terrified.
Emily whispered:
“What happened that day?”
Callahan answered:
“That's what we need to find out.”
Then Emily noticed something else.
On the back of the photograph was another handwritten message.
Samuel's handwriting.
