Chapter 6 - The Accusation

Emily laughed once.
It was not because anything was funny.
“You're saying Dad was investigating me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
“Then you're lying.”
Adrian looked exhausted.
“I wish I were.”
Callahan interrupted.
“Adrian, you need to leave.”
“No.”
He pulled a folder from his coat.
“My father gave me this six months before he died.”
Emily stared at it.
“You had this the whole time?”
“I didn't know what it meant.”
“Open it.”
Adrian did.
Inside was a series of bank statements.
Emily's name appeared repeatedly.
She felt the room tilt.
“These accounts aren't mine.”
“I know.”
“Then why is my name on them?”
“That is what Dad was trying to discover.”
Callahan took the documents.
“These are forged.”
Adrian looked at him.
“How do you know?”
“Because Samuel showed them to me.”
Emily looked between them.
“So Dad knew someone was using my identity.”
“Yes,” Callahan said.
“Who?”
Neither answered.
Then Emily noticed something.
A tiny handwritten mark appeared in the corner of each document.
A triangle.
She remembered seeing the same symbol on one of her father's old notebooks.
She reached for it.
Callahan stopped her.
“Don't.”
“Why?”
“Because that symbol belonged to an internal investigation Samuel never completed.”
Adrian suddenly turned toward the entrance.
“Someone is coming.”
This time the footsteps were unmistakable.
Multiple people.
Callahan closed the folder.
“Back door.”
They moved quickly.
Emily followed Adrian through a narrow corridor.
Before she exited, she looked back.
Someone had entered the main room.
She saw only a silhouette.
But the person placed something on the table.
A photograph.
Emily stopped.
The photograph showed her.
