Chapter 8 - What Thomas Reed Knew

Emily spent the next two days searching every archive connected to Whitlock Holdings.

She discovered that Thomas Reed had not simply been an employee.

He had been Samuel's closest financial investigator.

He had uncovered missing funds.

He had also discovered that several employees had been paid to alter company records.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Eleanor.

But another name appeared beside hers.

Adrian.

Emily confronted her brother.

He didn't deny it.

“I worked with Thomas.”

“Were you involved?”

“No.”

“Did you know what Eleanor was doing?”

“I knew she was hiding something.”

“What?”

“I don't know.”

Emily slammed the file onto the table.

“You expect me to believe that?”

Adrian looked at her.

“You shouldn't trust me.”

“At least you're finally honest.”

He smiled sadly.

“Emily, there is something worse.”

“What?”

“The money wasn't stolen from the company.”

Emily froze.

“Then where did it go?”

Adrian opened his laptop.

He showed her a series of transactions.

The money had been moved into accounts belonging to charities.

Charities that no longer existed.

Emily frowned.

“Why would someone do that?”

“Because those charities were connected to political donors.”

Emily stared.

“This is bigger than our family.”

“Yes.”

“Who was behind it?”

Adrian looked toward the door.

“That's what Dad discovered.”

“Tell me.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because the person who helped Dad discover it is still alive.”

Emily's voice lowered.

“Who?”

Adrian opened his mouth.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

He listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

Emily stood.

“What?”

May you like

Adrian looked at her.

“Callahan has been attacked.”
