Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Hale Family
Derek was not taken away immediately.
The officers separated everyone and secured the electronic devices inside the room. Elena gave her statement while Rachel remained beside her.
Marlene repeatedly insisted the conversation had been misunderstood.
“We were trying to help her,” she said.
The recordings proved otherwise.
Investigators found evidence of forged signatures, fraudulent loan applications, unauthorized surveillance, and attempts to manipulate Elena into surrendering control of her finances.
The hidden camera also captured Derek admitting that he knew the company records were false.
Within forty-eight hours, Derek was formally charged with multiple financial offenses. Additional charges followed after investigators examined his computers.
Marlene was charged for her role in the conspiracy and for helping create false statements about Elena’s mental condition.
The scandal spread quickly.
Investors withdrew from Hale Development. The company’s board removed Derek from every position of authority. Several former employees came forward with information about manipulated accounts and unpaid contractors.
The mansion was not truly owned by Derek or Marlene. It had been used as security for company debts.
The bank began legal proceedings to seize it.
For years, the Hale family had used the house as a symbol of superiority. Now reporters gathered outside its gates while boxes of financial evidence were carried through the front entrance.
Elena did not remain to watch.
Rachel drove her to the secure apartment prepared weeks earlier. Sofia was waiting inside.
The moment Elena saw her friend, the strength she had carried through the night finally broke. She sat on the sofa and cried.
Sofia held her hand.
“You’re safe now.”
Elena looked around the small apartment. It had simple furniture, plain walls, and none of the luxury of the mansion.
Yet it felt more peaceful than any room she had entered in over a year.
During the following weeks, Elena cooperated with investigators and began rebuilding her professional life.
Some people who had believed Derek’s stories apologized.
Others remained silent.
