Chapter 4 - The First Piece of Evidence
Elena began keeping a private record.
She wrote down dates, conversations, and financial changes in a notebook hidden inside the lining of an old suitcase.
She saved screenshots of messages and transferred important documents to an online account Derek did not know existed.
The more she documented, the clearer the pattern became.
Derek had taken money from their joint account to cover debts connected to Hale Development. He had used Elena’s name on loan applications she had never seen. Several electronic signatures appeared to be hers, but she had not approved them.
When Elena confronted him about one transaction, he denied everything.
“You must have forgotten signing it.”
“I did not sign this.”
“You’ve been forgetting many things lately.”
Marlene watched from the dining table.
“I noticed that too,” she said. “Perhaps you should see a doctor.”
That sentence frightened Elena more than Derek’s anger.
They were not simply controlling her.
They were preparing a story about her mental condition.
A week later, Elena found a document on Derek’s desk. It was an unsigned letter addressed to a private physician. The letter described Elena as emotionally unstable, confused, and unable to manage financial decisions.
At the bottom was a request for a medical evaluation.
Elena photographed every page.
The next morning, she contacted Rachel Monroe, a lawyer recommended by Sofia.
Elena met Rachel in a quiet office building under the excuse of attending a client meeting.
Rachel listened without interrupting.
When Elena finished, Rachel placed the photographs on the desk.
“This is not a difficult marriage,” she said. “This appears to be coercive control, financial fraud, and an organized attempt to discredit you.”
Elena looked down at her hands.
“I don’t have enough proof.”
“You have a beginning.”
Rachel advised her not to confront Derek again. She needed copies of the financial records and evidence of their plan.
“Can you leave the house safely?” Rachel asked.
“Not without them noticing.”
“Then we prepare carefully.”
Rachel gave Elena a second phone and the number of a secure apartment managed by a local support organization.
Before Elena left, Rachel stopped her.
“They have spent months teaching you to doubt yourself. From this moment forward, you document facts, not their version of reality.”
