Chapter 5 - The Camera in the Smoke Detector
The hidden camera had originally been Derek’s idea.
Months earlier, he installed security devices throughout the mansion after claiming valuable jewelry had disappeared during a party. Small cameras appeared near the entrances, hallways, and office.
Derek controlled the system through his phone.
He told Elena the bedroom would remain private.
She later discovered that was another lie.
While searching for financial documents in the home office, Elena found a folder containing video clips from inside their bedroom. Some showed her changing clothes behind a screen. Others captured private conversations.
She felt sick.
Derek had been recording her without consent.
Rachel instructed her to copy the files but leave the system untouched. Those recordings established that Derek had invaded Elena’s privacy, but they also gave Rachel an idea.
The bedroom’s smoke detector contained an inactive camera left over from an earlier security installation. Derek believed it no longer worked.
With help from a licensed investigator, Elena replaced the internal storage and connected the device to a secure remote account.
The plan was simple.
Elena would not create conflict. She would only record what Derek and Marlene chose to say.
For two weeks, the camera captured insults, financial threats, and discussions about isolating her.
One evening, Derek and Marlene entered the bedroom while Elena was downstairs.
The camera recorded everything.
“She is becoming suspicious,” Derek said.
Marlene sat on the edge of the bed.
“Then accelerate the medical evaluation.”
“She won’t agree.”
“She doesn’t need to agree if you can prove she is a danger to herself or others.”
Derek lowered his voice.
“And after that?”
“You control the accounts while she receives treatment. By the time anyone questions it, the development loan will be covered.”
Elena watched the recording alone the following morning.
Her body went cold.
They intended to have her declared incapable so Derek could use the rest of her money.
Rachel immediately contacted law enforcement, but the existing evidence still required authentication. The police began reviewing the financial records discreetly.
They told Elena not to reveal the camera.
