Chapter 6 - The Woman They Underestimated
Derek became increasingly desperate as Hale Development’s debts grew.
A luxury apartment project had failed inspections, and investors were demanding answers. Instead of accepting responsibility, Derek moved money between accounts to hide the losses.
Elena’s savings represented his final escape.
He began pressuring her to sign documents.
“These are temporary guarantees,” he explained. “The company will repay everything within six months.”
Elena pretended to study the pages.
“I need time.”
“You’re my wife. Why would you need time?”
“Because my name is on them.”
Derek slammed his hand against the desk.
Marlene appeared in the doorway almost immediately, as though she had been waiting.
“Your husband is trying to protect this family,” she said.
Elena placed the pen down.
“I’m not signing anything tonight.”
Derek stepped closer, but the sound of a household employee approaching in the hall made him stop.
Later, Elena sent photographs of the documents to Rachel.
The papers contained false income statements and personal guarantees worth nearly two million dollars.
Rachel told Elena the investigation was progressing, but the authorities needed a direct connection between Derek, Marlene, and the fraudulent applications.
Elena already had recordings of their private discussions, but Rachel wanted stronger proof that they understood the documents were illegal.
“We need them to explain what they are doing in their own words,” Rachel said.
Elena knew how to make that happen.
The next evening, she deliberately left a printed email on the kitchen counter. It appeared to show that one of the banks had contacted her about a suspicious loan.
Derek found it before dinner.
He stared at Elena across the table, but said nothing in front of the staff.
At midnight, he entered the bedroom and asked what she had told the bank.
“Nothing yet,” Elena replied.
Derek’s voice became soft.
“You know mistakes happen in business.”
“Using my identity is not a mistake.”
Marlene entered behind him.
“Be careful with accusations,” she warned. “People may begin questioning your judgment.”

They were giving her exactly what she needed.
