Chapter 8 - The Second Name

Back at Mark's office, they read the letter again.

There had to be something they missed.

Emily spread the documents across the conference table.

Ethan studied the old corporate charts.

Mark examined the trust records.

Nothing.

Then Emily noticed something.

The photograph.

She turned it over.

Her father's handwriting was visible beneath the ink.

Three initials.

E.C.

Ethan looked at her.

“Emily Carter?”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

She stared at the letters.

“My father's middle name was Edward.”

Mark frowned.

“Edward Carter.”

Emily nodded.

“E.C.”

Ethan said,

“But he's dead.”

“Yes.”

“Then who is the second name?”

Emily didn't answer.

Mark searched the trust registry.

The system returned an old record.

One name appeared.

Emily's breath caught.

It was not her father.

It was not Daniel.

It was someone she had never heard of.

Mark read the name aloud.

“Eleanor Carter.”

Emily stared.

“Who is Eleanor?”

Ethan looked confused.

“I've never heard of her.”

Emily shook her head.

“Neither have I.”

Mark opened another file.

The name appeared again.

And again.

Always connected to the original corporate structure.

Always hidden.

Always protected.

Then Mark found a birth record.

Emily leaned closer.

Her eyes widened.

Eleanor Carter had been born before Emily's father married.

Mark looked at Emily.

“Your father had a sister.”

Emily whispered,

“I don't remember him ever mentioning her.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Ethan stepped back.

“This changes everything.”

Before they could continue, the office door opened.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Elegant.

Silver hair.

Dark coat.

She looked directly at Emily.

“You took long enough.”

Emily stood.

“Who are you?”

The woman smiled.

“Your aunt.”

Emily couldn't speak.

The woman walked into the room.

“My name is Eleanor Carter.”

Mark stared.

“You were listed as deceased.”

Eleanor laughed softly.

“That was the point.”

Emily felt the room shift around her.

“Why did my father hide you?”

Eleanor looked toward the documents.

“Because your father knew Daniel would eventually come for everything.”

“And you knew?”

“I helped build the protection.”

Emily's voice became sharper.

“What is the truth?”

Eleanor sat down.

“The company was never Daniel's.”

Emily swallowed.

“Then whose was it?”

Eleanor looked directly at her.

“Yours.”

Emily stared.

“But why?”

“Because your father knew that Daniel loved power more than people.”

Eleanor leaned closer.

“And now he has crossed the line.”

Emily's phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

DANIEL HAS REQUESTED AN EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING.

Mark looked at it.

“When?”

“Tomorrow morning.”

Eleanor smiled.

“Good.”

Emily looked at her.

May you like

“Why?”

“Because tomorrow, your husband will finally be forced to defend a company he doesn't legally control.”
