Chapter 6 - The Locked Warehouse

The original Carter warehouse stood thirty miles outside the city.

It had been abandoned after the company moved its operations to a larger facility.

The building looked forgotten.

Rusting gates.

Cracked concrete.

Broken windows.

But Emily knew better.

Her father had always believed that important things should not be kept where everyone expected them to be.

They entered through a side door.

Ethan found an old electrical panel.

“Power's still connected.”

Mark frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.”

Emily walked ahead.

She remembered the building.

She remembered being sixteen years old and sitting in her father's office while he explained how businesses worked.

He had told her something she had never forgotten.

Never trust the person who tells you they own everything.

Sometimes ownership is hidden where nobody thinks to look.

Emily stopped.

“This is it.”

A wall stood in front of them.

Ethan looked confused.

“There's nothing here.”

Emily pointed.

“There.”

A small brass plate.

She pressed it.

Nothing happened.

Ethan tried.

Nothing.

Mark examined the wall.

Then Emily noticed a symbol.

A tiny carved triangle.

She touched it.

A section of the wall clicked.

It opened.

Behind it was a narrow staircase.

They descended.

At the bottom was a room.

Not large.

But preserved.

Shelves lined the walls.

Old files sat in sealed boxes.

A desk stood in the center.

Emily approached it.

On the desk was a photograph.

Her father.

Emily.

And Daniel.

Taken shortly before her father died.

Emily picked it up.

Behind the photograph was a handwritten message.

If you are reading this, Daniel has already failed the test.

Emily's hands trembled.

Mark read over her shoulder.

Ethan looked toward the shelves.

“What test?”

Emily opened the desk drawer.

Inside was a single envelope.

Her name was written on it.

Emily Carter.

She opened it.

Her father's letter was short.

He told her that he had created a protective structure around the company.

He explained that Daniel would believe he had inherited control.

But Daniel had only been entrusted with it.

The real ownership would remain protected until the day Daniel attempted to use the company against Emily.

Emily read the final paragraph twice.

Then she whispered,

“He knew.”

Mark nodded.

“What else?”

Emily turned the page.

Her face changed.

“What?”

She handed it to him.

Mark read it.

His expression became grim.

“What does it say?” Ethan asked.

Mark answered slowly.

“The reserve account isn't the real protection.”

Emily looked at him.

“Then what is?”

Mark turned the page.

There was only one sentence.

The company is protected by the person Daniel never thought to fear.

Ethan stared.

“Who?”

Emily looked at the photograph.

She knew.

But she didn't say it.

Her phone rang.

Daniel.

She answered.

“What?”

His voice was furious.

“Where are you?”

“Why?”

“You've gone too far.”

Emily looked around the hidden room.

“You have no idea.”

“I know about the account.”

Emily went silent.

Daniel continued.

“You think I don't know what you're doing?”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me.”

Silence.

Daniel didn't answer.

Emily smiled.

“You don't.”

He lowered his voice.

“Come home.”

“No.”

“Emily.”

“No.”

“I can still fix this.”

“You had years.”

“Please.”

It was the first time she had heard Daniel sound afraid.

Emily looked at Mark.

Then said,

“Who told you about the account?”

Daniel hung up.

Emily stared at the phone.

Ethan whispered,

“He didn't know.”

“No.”

Mark looked toward the doorway.

“Then someone else told him.”

May you like

Emily turned.

The lights went out.
