Chapter 14 - What Daniel Knew

The hearing was postponed.

The court ordered all parties to remain available.

Emily returned to Mark's office with Jonathan.

Eleanor arrived twenty minutes later.

When she saw Jonathan, she stopped.

“You.”

Jonathan nodded.

“Hello, Eleanor.”

Emily looked between them.

“You know each other.”

Eleanor closed the door.

“Yes.”

“Then tell me everything.”

Nobody answered.

Emily's patience broke.

“No more secrets.”

Jonathan finally spoke.

“Your father had another child.”

Emily stared.

“You?”

Jonathan nodded.

“But he never acknowledged me publicly.”

“Why?”

“Because my mother refused.”

Eleanor added,

“And because your father feared Daniel would use Jonathan to destroy the company.”

Emily frowned.

“How?”

Jonathan explained that Daniel had discovered Jonathan years earlier.

Instead of confronting him, Daniel had used the knowledge as leverage.

He threatened to expose the family.

He demanded control.

And Emily's father gave him a temporary position within the company structure.

Daniel believed that position would become permanent.

It never did.

Emily turned toward Eleanor.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because your father asked me not to.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

Emily looked at Jonathan.

“And you?”

“I stayed away because I thought it would protect you.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“Everyone thought keeping secrets would protect me.”

Jonathan looked down.

“Your father was wrong.”

“Yes.”

Emily sat.

For the first time, the entire picture began to make sense.

Daniel had spent years believing he was the architect.

But he had only been standing on top of a structure created before he understood what it was.

Mark opened the final trust document.

“There's still one problem.”

Emily looked at him.

“What?”

“The trust requires a final verification.”

“From whom?”

Mark pointed to the document.

“The successor.”

Jonathan frowned.

“That's me.”

“No.”

Mark turned the page.

“Not exactly.”

Emily leaned closer.

A clause had been highlighted.

The successor beneficiary could only assume control if another condition was met.

Emily read it.

Her heart sank.

“What does that mean?”

Mark answered,

“It means Jonathan cannot take control alone.”

“Then who can?”

Mark looked at Emily.

“You.”

Emily stared.

“But I thought I was only a beneficiary.”

“You are.”

“Then why am I needed?”

“Because the trust was designed to require both branches of the family.”

Jonathan nodded slowly.

“Your father wanted no single person to control the company.”

Emily understood.

It wasn't about taking Daniel's power.

It was about making sure no one could ever become Daniel again.

Then her phone rang.

Daniel.

She answered.

“What?”

Daniel's voice was quiet.

“I know what Jonathan is.”

Emily said nothing.

“I also know what your father planned.”

“Then you know you've lost.”

“No.”

Emily frowned.

Daniel continued.

“Because there is one document your father never told Eleanor about.”

Emily froze.

“What document?”

Daniel laughed softly.

“The one that could change who owns everything.”

The call ended.

Mark immediately looked at Emily.

“What did he say?”

Emily repeated it.

Jonathan's face went pale.

Eleanor whispered,

“No.”

Emily turned.

“What?”

Eleanor looked terrified for the first time.

“There was another document.”

“What document?”

Eleanor shook her head.

“I thought it was destroyed.”

Jonathan stood.

“Where?”

May you like

Eleanor looked toward the window.

“In Daniel's private residence.”
