Chapter 7 - Someone Inside

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The underground room became completely dark.

Ethan whispered,

“Don't move.”

Mark reached for his phone flashlight.

Emily heard a sound above them.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Someone was walking through the warehouse.

Mark signaled them toward the back wall.

Ethan opened a concealed cabinet.

Inside were old emergency lights.

He switched one on.

A dim red glow filled the room.

Emily stared at the stairs.

The footsteps stopped.

Then came three knocks.

From above.

Ethan whispered,

“That's impossible.”

“What?”

“This place has only one entrance.”

Mark looked at Emily.

“Then whoever is upstairs came through it.”

The footsteps began again.

Closer.

Emily grabbed the photograph.

Ethan pointed toward another passage.

“This way.”

They moved quickly.

The passage led into an old loading corridor.

Behind them, a door opened.

Someone entered the hidden room.

Emily heard a voice.

“Find the documents.”

She froze.

She knew that voice.

Daniel's head of security.

Mark pulled her onward.

They reached the loading bay.

A vehicle waited outside.

Ethan's old car.

They climbed inside.

Mark started the engine.

As they drove away, Emily looked through the rear window.

A man stepped out of the warehouse.

He watched them leave.

He did not chase.

He simply raised his phone.

Someone called him.

He answered.

“They have the letter.”

A pause.

“Yes.”

Another pause.

“No.”

Then he smiled.

“She still doesn't know the second name.”
