Chapter 1 - The Woman in the Mirror

Two hours earlier, Emily Carter had been standing in front of a marble restroom mirror, trying not to cry.
The executive restroom occupied an entire corner of the thirty-second floor of Carter National Logistics.
Everything about it was designed to communicate wealth.
White marble.
Brushed brass.
Floor-to-ceiling mirrors.
Soft recessed lighting.
A private sitting area.
Even the sinks looked like sculptures.
Emily had never cared about any of it.
For years, she had walked through this building beside Daniel and watched people lower their voices when he entered.
She had watched employees smile at him.
Executives flatter him.
Investors shake his hand.
She had watched him become convinced that every person around him existed because of him.
Including her.
Especially her.
That morning, she had entered the restroom believing she would finally confront him.
She had prepared a folder.
She had prepared questions.
She had even prepared herself for the possibility that he would lie.
She had not prepared for Vanessa.
The first cut had shocked her.
The second had made her understand.
By the third, Emily stopped fighting.
Her hair fell across the marble counter.
Vanessa laughed.
“You should see your face.”
Emily stared at her reflection.
The woman in the mirror looked unfamiliar.
Uneven strands framed her face.
Her red dress remained perfectly fitted, absurdly elegant against the humiliation.
Vanessa lifted the scissors again.
“Maybe this will teach you something.”
Emily finally turned.
“Put those down.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Or what?”
Emily looked toward the door.
“Daniel will hear about this.”
Vanessa laughed.
“That is exactly why I'm doing it.”
The door opened.
Daniel entered.
Emily looked at him.
For one brief second, she believed everything would stop.
She believed he would see what had happened.
She believed the years between them still meant something.
“Daniel.”
He looked at her hair.
Then at Vanessa.
Then back at Emily.
“What happened?”
Emily waited.
Vanessa answered first.
“She attacked me.”
Emily's eyes widened.
“That isn't true.”
Daniel frowned.
“Emily.”
“She cut my hair.”
Vanessa raised her eyebrows.
“After threatening me.”
Emily stared at Daniel.
“You believe her?”
Daniel exhaled.
“Jesus, Emily. What did you do to provoke her?”
Something inside Emily went quiet.
Not broken.
Not destroyed.
Quiet.
She looked at the man she had married.
The man whose company she had helped build.
The man whose worst decisions she had spent years quietly repairing.
And she understood.
There was nothing left to save.
Emily looked at Vanessa.
Then Daniel.
“Five minutes.”
Daniel scoffed.
“What?”
Emily turned toward the door.
“Five minutes.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Is that supposed to scare us?”
Emily stopped.
She didn't turn around.
“No.”
Her voice was almost a whisper.
“It's supposed to give you time.”
Daniel folded his arms.
“For what?”
Emily finally looked over her shoulder.
“To realize you should have been afraid.”
Then she walked out.
She didn't run.
She didn't cry.
She didn't look back.
But the moment the elevator doors closed, she pulled out her phone.
She called one person.
“Mark.”
Her attorney answered immediately.
“I'm listening.”
“Start it.”
There was a pause.
“You're certain?”
Emily looked at her reflection in the elevator doors.
“Yes.”
“Once I file, there is no easy way back.”
“I know.”
“Emily, this could affect everything.”
“I know.”
“Your marriage.”
“I know.”
“Your financial interests.”
“I know.”
“And Daniel's company.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“He made his choice.”
Mark was silent.
Then he said, “I'll see you at the office.”
The elevator descended.
Emily opened the folder she had carried upstairs.
Inside were documents Daniel had never seen.
Documents that had been prepared years earlier.
May you like
Documents she had never intended to use.
Until today.
