Chapter 9 - Room 9

The Hearthline building looked dead.
Broken windows stared across an overgrown parking lot.
Vines climbed the brick walls.
A faded sign near the entrance read HARTWELL RESIDENCES.
Ortiz brought two officers.
Emma, Brandon, and Margaret remained behind the police line initially.
"Initially" lasted nine minutes.
Emma insisted on entering once the building was cleared.
The basement smelled of mold and standing water.
Room 9 was secured by a corroded padlock.
Police cut it.
Inside stood filing cabinets.
Empty shelves.
A collapsed desk.
Nothing resembling a revelation.
Then Emma noticed scratches on the concrete floor.
Something heavy had been dragged repeatedly.
They moved the cabinet.
Behind it was a narrow opening.
A hidden compartment.
Inside were three waterproof containers.
Ortiz opened the first.
Financial records.
The second contained cassette tapes.
The third held dozens of photographs.
Emma picked one up.
Her father.
Sarah Vale.
Peter Caldwell.
Elias Vale.
Martin Vale.
Several other people.
They stood in front of luxury homes.
One photograph showed Daniel handing Sarah an envelope.
On the back:
FOR WHEN YOU LEAVE.
Margaret began crying.
"He was helping her."
Ortiz opened another file.
Sarah had been an accountant for Hearthline.
She discovered the fraud before Daniel did.
Daniel helped her copy records.
Sarah planned to expose the organization.
Then she disappeared.
"They thought Daniel had the copies," Emma said.
Ortiz nodded.
"And maybe he did."
One cassette had a date written on it.
Three days before Sarah vanished.
Ortiz found an old recorder in the police evidence van.
The tape crackled.
Then Sarah's voice filled the basement.
"If you're hearing this, Daniel convinced you to look."
Emma held her breath.
Sarah sounded young.
Tired.
Afraid.
"The Vales aren't a family business anymore. Elias built something bigger. Banks. Contractors. appraisers. City officials."
A pause.
"If I disappear, Peter knows why."
Emma looked at Ortiz.
The tape continued.
"But Peter isn't the one I'm afraid of."
Another pause.
"I'm afraid of the woman Daniel trusts."
Static.
Then footsteps on the recording.
Sarah whispered urgently.
"Someone's here."
The tape ended.
Margaret stared at the machine.
"The woman Daniel trusts."
Emma looked at her mother.
Margaret's face collapsed.
"No."
Brandon stepped closer.
"Mom, who did Dad trust?"
Margaret slowly shook her head.
"I don't know."
"Sarah thought it mattered."
"I don't know!"
Her voice echoed through the basement.
Emma hugged her.
Then one officer called from behind the hidden compartment.
"Detective?"
A second wall panel had been discovered.
Inside was a photograph pinned to wood.
A woman stood beside Daniel.
Her face had been deliberately scratched away.
Underneath, someone had written:
SHE SOLD US ALL.
Emma removed the photograph.
Margaret saw it.
Her knees nearly gave out.
"You know her," Emma said.
Margaret whispered, "I know the dress."
"What dress?"
"My sister wore it to your graduation."
Emma stared.
"Your sister?"
May you like
Margaret looked at her.
"Aunt Rebecca."
