Chapter 14 - What Peter Knew

Peter Caldwell's body was discovered inside a rented storage unit.
At first glance, it looked like suicide.
Ortiz did not believe it.
Neither did Emma.
A note had been left.
I did what Daniel refused to do.
No signature.
No explanation.
Inside Peter's jacket pocket, police found a keycard belonging to a private medical facility called Willow Ridge Recovery Center.
Emma recognized the name.
"That's where Dad did physical therapy after his shoulder surgery."
Margaret looked at her.
"When?"
"The year before he died."
Rebecca went pale.
"Sarah worked there."
Everyone turned.
"What?"
"After she disappeared."
Rebecca gripped the table.
"She used a different name. I heard rumors."
Ortiz obtained a warrant.
Willow Ridge had changed ownership repeatedly.
The current administrator claimed no records existed from that period.
Police found some anyway.
In a sealed basement archive.
A patient had been admitted under the name Sara Bell.
Age matched Sarah Vale.
Admission date:
Six days after Sarah's official disappearance.
She remained there eleven months.
Discharge status:
TRANSFERRED.
Destination blank.
The attending physician was dead.
The administrative signer was Peter Caldwell.
"He hid her," Emma said.
Ortiz shook her head.
"Or imprisoned her."
A second record changed everything.
Visitor authorization.
Daniel Carter visited Sara Bell fourteen times.
The final visit occurred on the date of the video from the safe deposit box.
Then nothing.
Emma looked at Rebecca.
"Did Dad know where she went afterward?"
"I don't know."
Police searched Peter's home.
They found a locked cabinet.
Inside were files on Hearthline victims.
Photographs of Daniel.
Photographs of Sarah.
Photographs of Emma and Brandon growing up.
Someone had tracked them for years.
One folder was labeled MARGARET.
Emma's hands shook opening it.
Surveillance photos.
Margaret at the grocery store.
Margaret at church.
Margaret gardening.
Margaret visiting Daniel's grave.
The most recent photo was three weeks old.
Someone had photographed Vanessa shouting at Margaret outside the villa.
Emma stared.
"They knew."
Ortiz nodded.
"Someone knew what was happening in your house."
"And did nothing."
Then Brandon found a page taped beneath the drawer.
A handwritten list.
Elias Vale.
Martin Vale.
Rebecca Sloan.
Daniel Carter.
Sarah Vale.
Next to each name was a status.
ELIAS - ACTIVE
MARTIN - ACTIVE
REBECCA - LOCATED
DANIEL - CLOSED
SARAH - UNKNOWN
At the bottom:
EMMA - UNINVOLVED
BRANDON - ACCESS POINT
Brandon stepped backward.
"They used me."
Emma looked at him.
His eyes were horrified.
"My debt."
He understood.
"Elias didn't randomly meet me."
"No," Ortiz said.
"He targeted you."
Brandon sat.
Every failure.
Every loan.
Every threat.
Perhaps engineered to gain access to the villa.
To the documents.
To Margaret.
Emma suddenly remembered something.
"The refinancing."
Ortiz looked at her.
"What about it?"
"They didn't need four million."
Brandon nodded slowly.
"Elias told me he didn't care about the money."
Emma's thoughts accelerated.
"What would happen during refinancing?"
Victor answered from the doorway.
"The bank would require a title review, inspection, appraisal, ownership verification."
Emma turned.
"And documents."
"Yes."
"Old documents."
Victor understood.
"They wanted to force the property records into formal review."
Ortiz said, "Why?"
Emma looked toward the study.
"The house."
Margaret stared.
"What about it?"
Emma thought of Daniel's note.
Protect Emma and Brandon.
The mysterious money.
Sarah's key.
The villa purchased partly with victim funds.
Then she remembered something the original restoration contractor had once said.
The property had an old wine cellar that had been sealed before they bought it.
Nobody had ever opened it.
Emma stood.
"The house wasn't just bought with the money."
May you like
She looked toward the floor.
"I think Dad bought this house because something was already here."
