Chapter 5 - The Forged Signature

Detective Lena Ortiz arrived with two officers.
She was forty-something, calm, observant, and immediately suspicious of everyone.
Emma liked her.
The intruder had left partial shoe impressions on the pergola roof.
The villa's security system showed that one exterior camera had been remotely disabled eight minutes before he entered.
The others remained active.
The man's face appeared only briefly.
Ortiz paused the footage.
"Recognize him?"
Nobody did.
Margaret seemed uncertain.
Emma noticed.
"Mom?"
"I don't know."
"That's different from no."
Margaret looked embarrassed.
"He reminds me of someone."
"Who?"
"I can't place it."
Ortiz saved the image.
Then Emma showed her the forged financial documents.
The investigation changed direction instantly.
"How much is the attempted loan?" Ortiz asked.
"Four million."
"And you did not authorize it?"
"No."
"Do you recognize the signature?"
"It's an imitation of mine."
Victor Hale, still present because police asked guests to remain temporarily, stepped forward.
"I can help clarify the bank side."
Ortiz looked at him.
"Who approved the application?"
"It hasn't been approved. But it progressed far enough that someone internally treated the signatures as verified."
"Who?"
Victor hesitated.
"That's what concerns me."
Emma watched him.
"Say it."
"The verification was processed by a senior lending officer named Peter Caldwell."
Brandon sat down heavily.
Emma looked at him.
"You know him."
Brandon rubbed his face.
Vanessa answered.
"He's one of our investors."
Emma's eyes narrowed.
"In Brooks Heritage Estates?"
Vanessa nodded.
"How much?"
"He promised five million after refinancing."
"So he helps verify a fraudulent loan, then invests the money back into your company?"
Vanessa snapped, "I didn't know the signatures were fraudulent."
"Did you think Brandon owned this house?"
"Yes."
Emma looked at Brandon.
He whispered, "I told her."
Vanessa turned on him.
"You told me your mother transferred it."
"I was going to fix everything before Emma noticed."
Emma almost laughed.
"Fix four million dollars?"
"My company was failing."
"Again?"
Brandon's shoulders collapsed.
The first business failure had supposedly happened because a supplier vanished with customer deposits.
Emma had loaned him nearly two hundred thousand dollars afterward.
Now she wondered how much of that story had been true.
Ortiz stepped between them.
"Nobody destroys or moves any financial records."
She looked at Brandon.
"You'll need to come in tomorrow."
Then she turned to Emma.
"I'd recommend freezing anything tied to this property immediately."
Victor nodded.
"I can contact legal."
Emma hesitated.
Then she remembered Vanessa slapping Margaret.
"No more trust."
Victor understood.
"I'll give you the department contacts directly."
Police eventually left.
Vanessa disappeared into the guest room.
Brandon remained downstairs.
Emma took Margaret upstairs to the main bedroom.
Her mother protested.
Emma ignored her.
While helping her change, she saw more bruising across Margaret's back.
Not one incident.
A pattern.
Emma sat very still.
"How long?"
Margaret avoided her eyes.
"Mom."
"Vanessa gets angry."
"How long?"
"Months."
Emma's voice broke.
"And Brandon?"
"He never hit me."
"Did he stop her?"
Margaret was silent.
That answer hurt more.
Emma covered her face.
"I should've come home."
"You were working."
"I called every week."
"I lied."
"Why?"
Margaret smiled sadly.
"Because every time you called, I could hear machines behind you. Alarms. People needing you."
"You're my mother."
"And they were dying."
Emma took her hand.
"That doesn't make you expendable."
Margaret began crying.
The anger Emma had been holding hardened into certainty.
Whatever happened with the property, Brandon and Vanessa would leave.
That part was finished.
Then Margaret whispered, "There's something else."
Emma looked up.
"Brandon didn't move me into the laundry room."
"Vanessa did?"
Margaret shook her head.
"I did."
Emma stared.
May you like
"Why?"
"Because someone kept entering my bedroom at night."
