Chapter 13 - The Fall of Vanessa Brooks

While the investigation into Daniel's past expanded, Emma refused to forget the reason she had come home angry in the first place.
Her mother.
Vanessa had abused Margaret.
Brandon had allowed it.
No mystery from fourteen years earlier would erase that.
Rachel Lin filed the eviction action.
The title was locked against refinancing.
Northlake suspended Peter Caldwell and referred the fraudulent loan to federal investigators.
Vanessa's company collapsed within forty-eight hours.
Investors withdrew.
Her promotional material had represented Emma's villa as a Brooks Heritage asset.
That claim was demonstrably false.
A local reporter published the first story.
Then the security footage leaked.
Emma did not leak it.
Ortiz believed someone at the dinner had recorded the playback.
The public reaction was brutal.
Vanessa Brooks, who had spent years carefully manufacturing an image of elegance and charity, was now known as the woman who slapped an elderly mother and ordered her to scrub a patio.
Brand partnerships vanished.
Two nonprofit boards removed her.
Her company website went offline.
Vanessa came to Emma one evening.
No makeup.
No designer handbag.
No arrogance.
"Can we talk?"
Emma stood at the villa doorway.
"No."
"Please."
Margaret appeared behind Emma.
Vanessa looked at her.
Her face crumpled.
"I'm sorry."
Margaret remained silent.
Vanessa cried.
"I was angry at my life."
Margaret finally spoke.
"So was I."
Vanessa looked up.
Margaret's voice was quiet.
"My husband died. I raised children. I buried friends. I became old enough that people began speaking around me instead of to me."
She stepped closer.
"I never hit someone weaker because I was angry."
Vanessa looked down.
"I know."
"No," Margaret said. "You're beginning to know."
Emma watched her mother.
Vanessa wiped her face.
"Will you forgive me?"
Margaret considered the question.
"Not today."
Vanessa nodded.
It was the first respectful response Emma had seen from her.
Then Vanessa turned toward Emma.
"What about Brandon?"
"What about him?"
"Are you throwing him away too?"
Emma's expression hardened.
"He made his choices."
"He was afraid."
"So was Mom."
Vanessa left.
Brandon was staying at a motel.
He had begun cooperating fully with Ortiz.
He handed over phones, financial accounts, and every communication with Elias.
The information helped identify three additional shell companies.
It did not repair the family.
One week after the slap, Brandon came to the villa.
Margaret opened the door.
Emma watched from the hallway.
"Mom."
Margaret said nothing.
Brandon began crying before he could finish his next sentence.
"I'm sorry."
She stared at him.
"I know."
"I should've stopped her."
"Yes."
"I should've told Emma."
"Yes."
"I thought if I kept everyone calm long enough, I'd fix everything."
Margaret looked at her son.
"Silence doesn't keep peace, Brandon."
He lowered his head.
"It just gives cruelty more room."
He nodded.
Margaret stepped aside.
Not forgiveness.
But not exile.
He entered.
Later that night, Emma found him sitting beside the old fountain.
"You hate me?" he asked.
Emma considered lying.
"No."
He looked surprised.
"I'm furious with you."
"That's fair."
"I don't trust you."
His eyes lowered.
"That's fair too."
"But I don't hate you."
He nodded slowly.
Emma sat beside him.
"You'll repay what you stole."
"I will."
"You'll cooperate with every investigation."
"Yes."
"You'll never make Mom responsible for your fear again."
Brandon looked toward the upstairs window.
"Never."
Emma studied him.
"Then maybe someday you'll become someone I trust again."
His eyes filled.
"Maybe?"
"Don't push it."
For the first time in days, they both almost smiled.
Then Emma's phone rang.
Detective Ortiz.

Peter Caldwell had been found.
Dead.
